Cultural awareness. At what point does lack of it excuse you of blame? Ever?

I don't know the answer to that. But I know growing up I had no real cultural awareness of black people. I still don't because I am not black.

So they become the judge of our actions in matters of race. They set the standard we are to live up to. I accept that.

I did not accept it as recently as the discussion of the rebel flag.

I did not see the confederate flag as a symbol of slavery. It was a decoration. We put it everywhere. It did not represent my heritage. I am a Northerner.

Can we have honest discussions of these things without all the baggage and labels we dump on each other?

We are not our past but we were shaped by it.

2. POC set the standard white Democrats are to live up to?
Sat Feb 2, 2019, 05:45 PM

Then are white Democrats supposed to set the standard they are to live up to? Out of our great awareness of what it is to be white that they can't possibly understand either? What about mixed-race people? Does everyone defer to them equally or does one race have a duty to defer more? Or should we assume they're hopelessly confused and disqualify them?

Just won't work. Heck, large numbers of people of all races can't even set or follow adequate standards for themselves.

Btw, here's something worthy of our outrage from this week that no one's raging about:

Arizona GOP won’t expel racist lawmaker charged with child pornography.

It would be hard to find a bigger source of embarrassment for the Arizona Republican Party than state Rep. David Stringer. But apparently he is not a big enough embarrassment to merit expulsion from the state House.

Last year, Stringer faced outrage after his reported comments that African-Americans “don’t fit in,” and that integrating schools is impossible because there aren’t “enough white kids to go around.” But as if that weren’t enough, criminal records unearthed by the Phoenix New Times revealed Stringer was indicted in Maryland in 1983 on five sex offenses, including child pornography, found guilty of three, and sentenced to probation and psychiatric treatment. The details are unknown because his record was expunged as part of a deal.

After all of that, though, and even though GOP Gov. Doug Ducey has called on him to resign, Republicans have defeated an effort to expel Stringer, with House Majority Leader Warren Petersen claiming that “We have a process, a process that I’m sure everybody in this room would like to be treated the same way with.” He will still be subject to an Ethics Committee hearing.

3. More important are your actions after you realized these things were racist. Do you listen to black

people? Seek out new knowledge? Do you justify yourself when people say things you said and did may have been hurtful, or do you listen and build your understanding?

There is a difference between a six-year-old child being dressed in a racist costume and a 25-year-old dressing himself in a racist costume. But it's also what you do with that knowledge afterward.

Because it’s never been the job of black people to tell you how to be white.

Suppose you own a dog who likes to go outside when your neighbor is mowing his lawn. Your neighbor tells you he would rather you kept your dog inside because he is deathly afraid of dogs ever since he had a dog related incident as a young child. You have two choices: 1) Tell the neighbor you understand and will be more careful 2) Tell the neighbor he is stupid and doesn't he realize your dog won't harm him. Which is the correct choice?

If something is racist, people can call it racist. POC should not have to worry about protecting white feelings when they're speaking the truth about their experience. If you want this discussion, you have to be all in.

Here is the OP's attempt at honest discussion of "these things without all the baggage and labels we dump on each other."

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=11761871
Me: "Did you wear a KKK hood and robes 35 years ago? Would you have considered doing it?"

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=11762073
The OP's response: "Please stop. Get some help. Get some reality. Wake up. Understand life and the world around you."

Apparently asking the question of whether someone would wear a KKK hood and robes meant that I need to "get some help" and am not dealing with reality.

So I'm not holding out a whole lotta hope for any honest discussions.

It's simple, really. If someone says something is hurtful, it costs you nothing to listen and respect that. What are you afraid of losing if you do?
