Tax experts say besides getting your refund faster, there is a more immediate reason to get your tax return filed with the IRS sooner than later. With the possibility of another government shutdown, starting late next week, it could delay your refund.
The recent 35-day shutdown created a backlog for the IRS, working only at a 50% capacity and the agency is still feeling the effects.
Also, if you have a 401k, and the information is not entered correctly, you could lose up to $200 in credits.

In other national news:
Legislating will not be the focus of the week for the House or Senate
Normally, the State of the Union address would dominate this weeks headlines on Capitol Hill but it just might be overshadowed by whats scheduled to happen at the end of the week.
On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a public hearing with acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker and the Intelligence Committee will conduct a closed-door deposition of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trumps former personal lawyer.
House Intelligence Chairman Adam B. Schiff announced the Cohen appearance last week. Mr. Cohen has relayed to the Committee his legitimate concerns for his own safety as well as that of his family, which have been fueled by improper comments made by the President and his lawyer, the California Democrat said in a statement. As Ive previously stated with my colleagues, Chairmen Elijah Cummings and Jerrold Nadler, efforts to intimidate witnesses, scare their family members, or prevent them from testifying before Congress are tactics we expect from organized crime, not the White House.
And a House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee hearing Thursday will look at proposals and procedures for obtaining presidential tax returns.

Anyway, what's a "refund"?
I'm sure I'll have to write a check. And I'm sure that, even if the government is shut down, somehow the check will be processed.

(54,436 posts)I'm always owed a huge refund because my employer in the USA withholds although I am a German resident. Usually I get my refund by the end of the year, although I got a scare last year. When I got to Dallas in January and looked through my mail, there was a letter from the IRS, barely pre-shutdown, saying they were holding my refund pending examination of my claim (whatever that meant). But then, a few envelopes later, was my refund, dated three days prior to the letter saying it wasn't coming.
The government is nothing if not efficient.
As for Adam Schiff's statement about "efforts to intimidate witnesses, scare their family members, or prevent them from testifying before Congress are tactics we expect from organized crime, not the White House," who is implying there is a difference?
