Who's won the race to the bottom?

By Gail Collins

... Wilbur Ross!

First time a secretary of commerce has ever won the title. Don’t let me hear you complaining that this administration hasn’t accomplished anything.

The Ross victory is a little suspect, since it came right after he gave an interview in which he expressed befuddlement about why furloughed government workers were going to food banks and homeless shelters when they could — you know, just go see their banker and take out a loan.

Do you think he was making a play for first place? Nah, that was just Wilbur being Wilbur, the guy who happily marveled that when Donald Trump visited Saudi Arabia “there was not a single hint of a protester anywhere.” When reminded that the Saudi government has a way of making protesters disappear, Ross admitted “in theory that could be true” but quickly added, “there was certainly no sign of it” ...

It seems to almost be a defining characteristic. No seriously. I mean it. When I was a cable guy, some of the dumbest fucking people I've ever met had a second or third home right on Lake Michigan. Case in point.

I have to put in another outlet for a third or fourth TV. Huge 4 story house overlooking the lake with the beach as their backyard. Easily a high 6 figure low 7 figure home. And it's their weekend getaway, of course. Some Chicago executive asshole. TV is in the finished basement. The wall it's on is also the bathroom wall. So bathroom behind the TV. Okay. So the TV is basically in the middle of the basement. Nowhere near an outer wall. I explain to him the only way I can make this work is to come through the outer wall. He's not willing to move the TV. Okay, well I'll have to tack the coax around the room. Not acceptable. Okay cool. We'll just cancel the job then. Bullshit! I need that TV hooked up! I explain again. I can't get cable in that wall dude. Unless you want to tear out a bunch of drywall, ain't ha'ning. Bring it through tbe attic. Ferfucks sake. That's not possible. Yes it most certainly is, if you knew what you you were doing! Now I'm pissed. I'm a lead installer. Which means you got the best dude you can hope for, which is why I'm the one standing in this million dollar weekend home. And you just insulted me and my work ethic. Doing my best not to bite my tongue in half, dig? I lose my cool slightly. I calmly tell him that if he knows where I might be able to purchase a 30' drillbit I'm all ears. And if he would be kind enough to show me how to use said bit in an attic with 4' of clearance, I'd be willing to try. Well that's why I'm paying you. Oh shit, you went there. Sir, you're not paying me. I don't work for you. I work for Comcast. And as a lead installer, I'm telling you it isn't possible without ripping out drywall. Period. Can't be done. Its physically Impossible to get an outlet here unless I tack it around the room. I don't believe that! I'm thinking holy shit! How am I making 35k and this numbnuts can afford this? How's it fucking possible? The world is on it's ear baby! I finally called dispatch canceled the job, and of course, get called into the office the next morning to explain my side of the complaint that was phoned in. All three supervisors shared one office. We all had a good laugh.

My experiences? Most people with money are fuckimg morons. Cause I got a bunch of these stories. This asshole was not a one off by any stretch.

no one ever tells them no. People kiss they’re asses all the time and just do what they say. They think everything that pops into their head is possible. It’s somebody else’s problem to carry out their wishes. I loathe people like that, and I refuse to work for them. It just ain’t worth it to me.
