On Saturday, one-time Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina talked about what it was like running against now-president Donald Trump during the last presidential primary.
You memorably had some unpleasant exchanges with then-candidate Donald Trump, CNNs S.E. Cupp asked Fiorina who was there to talk about her new book. You know he can be nasty. He can be tough. Whats your advice to any of the Democratic candidates men and women when it comes to running against him?
Let me just say in fairness and yes I did face nastiness from Donald Trump but frankly, he wasnt the only man I faced nastiness from on the campaign trail, Fiorina replied. She then explained Trump was just a symptom of a bigger problem.
The truth is that Donald Trump, in a way, reflects a culture that is still acceptable where you can say things about womens appearance either positive or negative, she explained. We would expect a presidential candidate or a president of the United States would be held to a higher standard but hes not the only man who has said irrelevant or demeaning or diminishing things about a womans appearance, positive or negative.
Fiorina then advised women running in 2020 not to lose their cool and to remind people whatever they think of your appearance that appearance is irrelevant to your qualifications to run.

(1,584 posts)I believe that Elizabeth Warren has the best campaing messages so far but many, even in our own Democratic Party, will not listen her precisely because of her persona. She is a fighter who is just audacious enough to take to the power structure. They will unite in their attacks and the Stepford women of the RW will be against her for having the nerve to call out their men. I still remember when Geraldine Ferraro was criticized for verbally challenging George Bush. Afterall, who did she think she was to take on a white male of such stature and political prowess?

(40,212 posts)When she was running for Senate in California against Sen. Barbara Boxer, Florina was on tape making the following statement:
"Did you see her hair, it is so yesterday."
There is a clip somewhere of this in which Florina was mocking the way Sen. Boxer wore her hair.
Said by the same person who also said: We would expect a presidential candidate or a president of the United States would be held to a higher standard but hes not the only man who has said irrelevant or demeaning or diminishing things about a womans appearance, positive or negative.
