Ted Cruz wants 'El Chapo' to pay for the border wall

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has an idea for how to pay for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall: Let Mexico’s recently convicted, notorious drug lord JoaquÍn “El Chapo” Guzmán do it.

As he tweeted out Tuesday night, Cruz believes the ”$14 billion in drug profits” U.S. prosecutors are seeking from Guzmán should “go towards funding our wall.”

Cruz’ EL CHAPO Act, which stands for “Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order,” isn’t novel, however. Cruz first introduced the idea in April 2017, and reintroduced the bill earlier this year, Jan. 3, the Washington Post reports.

Guzmán, who faces life in prison, will be sentenced June 25. According to the Washington Post, federal prosecutors will be seeking forfeiture of Guzmán’s financial assets.
