General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCorrect me if I'm wrong but haven't modern day presidents had mostly daughters?
Obama--2 daughters
Bush--2 daughters
Clinton--1 daughter
Bush the Elder--2 sons, 1 daughter
Reagan--1 son, 1 daughter
Carter--1 daughter
Ford--1 son, 1 daughter
Nixon--2 daughters
Johnson--2 daughters
Kennedy--1 son, 1 daughter
Did I miss anybody? Reagan had a son he didn't sire, right?
So, that whole "He's presidential material by force of his male-producing loins" doesn't hold a hell of a lot of water, does it?

(9,275 posts)Maureen (RIP) was his bio daughter with Jane Wyman; Michael is their adopted son
Ron and Patti are his children with Nancy.
Interestingly, St. Ronnie has no biological grandchildren--can't pass that DNA along, darn.

(5,179 posts)Because it was the most sexist, unscientific piece of garbage I've seen in quite some time. I think everyone needs to read it, to see that the "educated" conservatives are just as stupid as the ones with the poorly spelled picket signs.
And yes, you're right about the presidential son-to-daughter ratio.

(10,158 posts)There's Shrub, Jeb, Neil, the One They Don't Talk About, and a daughter; there was also a daughter who died young.
Reagan had 2 sons (1 adopted, IIRC) and 2 daughters. Carter has 3 sons in addition to his daughter; I think Ford had more than 1 son. FWIW, Lincoln had 4 sons, no daughters, Washington had no known children.
Statistically, given a large enough sample, which 43 people isn't, you'd expect half sons, half daughters. The National Review article is just trying to make something significant out of random biology: Romney having 5 sons is irrelevant to any leadership abilities he may have.

The idea is stupid and the idiot who wrote the piece is just trying to make something of Mittens having 5 sons - he's trying to use this, which only happened by chance, as a good reason to vote for Mitt. Pathetic.
And not even thinking about other Presidents! The opponents' progeny would matter I guess. Obama only won because his opponent didn't have sons either.
But then Clinton shouldn't have beaten Poppy. And women may flock to Clinton, but not to Poppy. Or Mittens for that matter.
How desperate they are. The polls don't even justify it. I guess they are preparing for the inevitable slide as more and more voters actually pay attention to Mittens.

(9,275 posts)Had 5 sons (one died in infancy) and 1 daughter. Read where they would have had an even bigger family but Eleanor ended "that part of their marriage" when she discovered love letters from one of his mistresses.

(41,991 posts)And you might want to go back to the books. Although I'm being well schooled in my kid count, some men do have a propensity to throw Xes over Ys and vice versa. Environmental factors sway the odds as well. I don't mind being schooled, but I won't be called stupid.

(6,801 posts)women under stress are more likely to spontaneously abort male fetuses over female.
So following some horrific event, like a major disaster or famine, you're more likely to have a shift towards girls (all else being equal).

(19,379 posts)Half of DU is fucking nonsense these days. This thread shows prime examples of people jumping all over an OP without regard for context or current events. It gets frustrating, but I think it's just a byproduct of being this far into the presidential election cycle.
