partisan obstruction ahead of the national interest. I urge my Democratic colleagues to quickly get serious, put partisanship aside, and work with
the president and our homeland security experts to provide the funding needed to secure our borders as we begin the next round of appropriations.

(51,460 posts)Dec. 2018? They could have secured the borders with any amount of taxpayer money they wanted.

(21,849 posts)Isn't that the real import of his statement? Even McConnell couldn't muster up language to create an alleged emergency.

(3,433 posts)I hate them both but I expect Trump to behave unethically, irresponsibly and unprofessionally. McConnell in some ways is worse because through his actions he has placed the senate under Trump's control. To abandon the separation of powers in such a public and unapologetic way is so perverse as to be unbelievable. Never would I imagine we would be in this situation.

(118,295 posts)Trump met with Pelosi and Shumer on 11 December 2018 (when Republicans still controlled both the House and the Senate) to complain he couldn't get his wall funded: "I cant get it passed in the House if its not going to pass in the Senate"
In this meeting, Trump asserted: "I am proud to shut down the government for border security ... I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. Im not going to blame you for it"
But a week later, he was shrieking: "The Democrats now own the shutdown!" and as Trump continued to insist he wouldn't sign an appropriations bill without wall funding, the Republican Party controlled House passed a bill with such funding but the Republican Party controlled Senate did not pass the bill
The shutdown began 22 December 2018
The 115th Republican Party controlled House ended when the new 116th Democratic Party controlled House arrived on 3 January 2019. The new House then promptly passed an appropriations bill, passed by the previous 115th Senate, but McConnell refused to bring the bill to the Senate floor, leading to a month-long shutdown. The stopgap funding bill that ended the shutdown with several weeks of funding was followed by a House and Senate conference committee proposal that led to the new funding bill
McConnell knows the Republican Party controlled Senate could not pass the wall funding, even when the Republican Party controlled House did, but despite his own role in the unnecessary shutdown and his own inability to run wall-funding through the Senate, McConnell wants to blame the Dems
