Dont take Michael Cohens word for itFordham University, one of the presidents alma maters, has confirmed that it did, in fact, receive a threatening letter warning it not to release Donald Trumps grades in the lead-up to the 2016 election, supporting the embarrassing allegation his former fixer made in his explosive testimony on Wednesday. Bob Howe, a spokesperson for the university, said in a statement to the Associated Press that the school received a call from someone on Trumps team, as well as a follow-up letter from a Trump attorney threatening to take action against the university if we did, in fact, release Mr. Trumps records.
We told the caller that Fordham is bound by federal law, and that we could not/would not reveal/share any records (as we would not reveal any student records) with anyone except Mr. Trump himself, or any recipient he designated, in writing, Howe said, according to the Fordham Ram, Fordhams student journal. (The superintendents secretary from the New York Military Academy told the A.P. that officials have no record of communication with Trumps legal team; the University of Pennsylvania and the College Board declined to comment.)
Its an especially ironic demand coming from Trump, who frequently brags about his intelligence. Not only has he proclaimed himself a stable genius with the best words, those he dislikes are deemed not smart, stupid, or wacky. He took special pains to question the intelligence of Barack Obama, calling on the then-president to [open] up and [give] his college records and applicationspart of his campaign to cast Obama as a terrible student.
As Cohen testified Wednesday, Trump fought to keep his own grades secret, directing his former fixer to threaten his alma maters not to release his transcriptssomething they said they couldnt legally do anyway. Im talking about a man who declares himself brilliant, but directed me to threaten his high school, his colleges, and the College Board to never release his grades or SAT scores, Cohen told the House Oversight Committee.

(62,444 posts)Just out of curiosity, in order to get a benchmark figure on what that sort of thing is worth, what would you take to break the law and render yourself unemployable for the rest of your life?
I havent seen a donation drive for the IRS employee who provided certain of Cohens bank records to Avenatti. That guy is fucked and alone now.

(14,977 posts)but not everybody thinks through the consequences of their actions all of the time. I'm curious what the penalty is. Do you know? Can you tell me?

(62,444 posts)Anyone who does it will be rendered unemployable. While there can be various state laws, the federal penalty is loss of Dept. of Education funds of all kinds from the institution, district or department. The individual involved is barred from handling such records (which means they cant do their job and will be fired, in addition to losing all their stuff in civil actions by the institution and the student).
Here is an FAQ on the subject:

The specific legal penalties are not really important compared to the effect it will have on someones life.
Its like asking, what is the legal penalty for being a racist and having your behavior posted to Yourube? Well, theres none. But in a practical sense, it ruins peoples miserable lives.

(5,914 posts)They deduct points for incorrect answers. Which means it's possible to achieve a negative raw score.
Which I suspect he has.
