Measles alert: Chicago Midway Airport passengers warned they may have been exposed

A Chicago Midway International Airport passenger might have exposed people to measles there and at a Chicago-area hospital in the past week, Illinois health officials said, as physicians across the globe contend with a surge of measles cases.

The passenger -- an Illinois resident whom officials aren't naming -- had the disease and was infectious when he or she was at the airport on the night of February 22, the Illinois Department of Public Health said.

The infected person was on a flight that arrived at the airport's Concourse B. Officials didn't say where the flight originated.

The person then sought treatment at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in the Chicago suburb of Geneva, health officials said

AIDS and Ebola were spread to Europe and the US by transportation: long distance, international air travel.

Measles is incredibly contagious and is airborne.

Chicago is home if the world’s 4th busiest airport. (O’Hare)

Vaccination drive ongoing to protect children from deadly measles outbreak in Ukraine

01 March 2019
Uliana Dziuba, 36, is holding the hands of her two young children as they wait to receive their vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Unlike her brother Volodia, nine-year-old Maryana is anxious, but Uliana knows how important today is.

“I used to refuse to vaccinate the children against measles,” she says. “Once, I refused because they were sick at the time. Another time, there was a very powerful anti-vaccination campaign on social media. But Maryana got measles at age three and now I’m very worried that my son will get sick. I am vaccinating both of them for the first time today.”

The pair are among thousands of children now being vaccinated in Lviv region, Ukraine, after the Ministry of Health with support from UNICEF launched an immunization drive. It is using a combined approach: teams of mobile doctors are working to reach school-age children while local clinics are increasing their ability to vaccinate more children.

The drive is happening as UNICEF warns that global cases of measles have surged to alarmingly high levels – including in countries that had previously been declared measles free – eroding progress against this highly preventable, but potentially deadly disease.

"Officials didn't say where the flight originated."

So everyone that passed through the airport should be worried.

However, what about the people on the flight from wherever to Chicago???

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases on the planet.

Back when the MMR vaccine was being used but chicken pox was still rampant, our pediatrics clinic had a special door on the side of the building just for kids with active cases of chicken pox to go straight into an exam room and avoid the waiting room. It really was not that long ago that parents as well as doctors understood that kids could get really sick from "childhood" diseases.
