Amnesty International: Syrian civilians endure ‘horrific’ regime violence

Amnesty International has accused Syrian government forces of endangering civilians by increasingly attacking residential areas indiscriminately.

After a 10-day investigation in Aleppo, Amnesty says civilians are enduring a horrific level of violence. It accuses government forces of randomly attacking neighbourhoods where opposition fighters are based, rather than specific military targets.

The report comes as fresh fighting has erupted in the main cities. In Aleppo the Syrian army is said to have seized central Christian districts from rebel control after a two-day battle, while fighting continues in the north.

Amnesty does not give the opposition a clean slate, but judges the overwhelming majority of the violence endangering civilians comes form the government.
