(29,674 posts)I might in the minority here on DU but there are definitely times I prefer Biden. I like Obama but there's something about watching Biden giving 'em all hell that makes me want to giggle. He calls them on their crap and they don't like it.

(10,893 posts)I doubt the GOPhers would've participated in as much obstructionism as they have been with Obama, and constantly calling him a socialist/Kenyan/marxist/whatever -ist.

(29,674 posts)possibly in weekly press conferences. I don't think he'd have any problems naming names and telling exactly why he was naming them.
I would think that there is a healthy amount of fear of Biden from his opponents.

(954 posts)The Culture Wars existed way before Obama came around. And Republican Nationalism was, too.
The only thing that would be different would be the EMOTIONS at play within the base. We'd see the same nationalist ploys, tho.

(17,863 posts)Truman's VP Alben Barkley who was key in Truman winning in 1948. I thought that it would have been better to move Biden to State and replace him with a more viable candidate for 2016 Presidental campaign, but one election at a time. I think Biden contrasts well with Ryan. Obama could do a whole lot worse.

(2,097 posts)This is what I think as well.
He is able to throw populist curveballs and speak boldly and he frequently runs off script. This is most of the reason they throw a lot of heat rounds at him and try to manufacture gaffes around him. It is fear.

(39,451 posts)a speech at a rally.
After the rally, the cameras went to this white tent where there were all these reporters with cameras and mics.
In the middle was this man that was screaming at the top of his lungs about how the swiftboaters were full of lies and how could people in the media give them the time of day!
I stopped what I was doing and watched this white haired man give the press a piece of his mind & I was actually cheering him on in my living room. Who is that? I asked myself - then CSpan does what it always does and shows you the name of the person speaking.... Joe Biden D-DE. I have been his biggest fan ever since. Love him!
And I agree.... I love Obama but Joe has got the fire in his belly.

(46,192 posts)but subtract any interest in being someone's friend.
Joe doesn't say things to be liked. He likes to be liked, he's a politician, after all. But he doesn't say different than he thinks in order to be liked.
That's what makes him so refreshing, and in fact, likable.
PatSeg
(47,482 posts)You can't teach it and you can't fake it. People who think they don't like Joe Biden, never really listened to him talk for more than a minute or two.
The right can't stand him because they know his appeal. I'm quite sure they are often behind most of the "gaffe" hype in an attempt to make him appear inconsequential and harmless. They like to reinforce the "goofy old Uncle Joe" persona because they could never compete with the REAL Joe.

I'd love to hear his response about USC right now. USC looking good and Akin being an ass while representing our state are two of the biggest hot topics at work. (49,002 posts)They are not scared of him. They think that Ryan is a wonk and will mop him up. However, it is becoming clearer that Ryan can quote numbers and talk a line but doesn't really understand how the budget really works and all the implications of his drastic cuts and tax giveaways to the rich.
They call Biden "Plugs" and think he is a goofball who mis-speaks all the time. They are drooling at the prospect of the debate.

(15,262 posts)A lot of the Catholic vote is conservative about issues like abortion, but not as strident as the far right. The Rs want to take the Catholic votes away from Obama/Biden and Ryan gives them part of that demographic, the more conservative Catholics. The United States has the fourth largest Catholic population in the world, Catholics make up about 25% of the adult population. However, once solidly Irish, Italian and Polish, the U.S. Roman Catholic Church, the largest Christian denomination in the country, has become increasingly Hispanic.
Percent of Catholics in some swing states!!
Ohio = 18%
Penn. = 28%
Nevada = 32%
Wisconsin = 29%
New Mexico 25%
Michigan = 22%
Kinda obvious now?
CabCurious
(954 posts)GoCubsGo
(32,084 posts)If they chose Ryan because he is a Catholic, then they not only underestimate Biden, they underestimate the voters. And, they didn't pick Ryan because he's Catholic, since that could lose them evangelical Christian votes. They picked him because they wanted his extreme conservatism to distract "the base" from Romney's flip-flopping. And, because they have this crazy notion that women will think he's good-looking and vote for him because of that.
The reason they're going after Biden now is because their own choice is going down like a lead balloon. Nobody is impressed with this little asshole, so they're trying to portray Joe Biden as the one who is some sort of buffoon that is a drag on his ticket, It's their usual projection.

(29,674 posts)If he decided to run in 2016 he would be a viable candidate. He's now very well known by the voters, which will help his campaign tremendously compared to his two past campaigns. He's got the blue collar appeal, which could bring in the independent voters. (He'd already have the Dem voters.)
I know plenty of people who seem to genuinely like him. That could go a long way in an election. They like his appeal and his take no crap attitude.
Honestly, his no crap attitude is more "manly" than what most of the Republican noms have been for a very long time. Who would a good old boy actually have more in common with: Bush/Cheney, McCain/Palin, Romney/Ryan or Joe Biden?

(31,706 posts)There's no better spokesman for the working man/woman in government today, or for the past 40 years, as Joe Biden. He speaks to the soul of the working class as few politicians can and this is highly effective. I supported Joe in '88 and always have admired the man for his always principled stands on issues.
The rushpublicans hate him cause when he scores a hit, it leaves a mark. He all but sunk Ru911dy's candidacy with his "a noun, a very and 9/11" quip. In many ways he's the "anti-Mittens"...moreso than President Obama and the rushpublicans want to try to shut him down where he can and they're using a tried and true rushbo tactic: ridicule. Try to marginalize him by making a cartoon character out of him.
