"I don't want to take care of those people"

"I don't want to take care of those people"

by digby

NPR did a story http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/i-dont-want-to-take-care-of-those-people.html on this preposterous welfare reform lie the Romney campaign refuses to stop telling. The reporter attempted to explain why they would keep doing it even though it's been rated "pants on fire" over and over again and they interviewed some voters.

I think this is the one who makes it pretty clear what's going on:

This specific attack about welfare ties into a broader concern that many Republicans share: Romney often argues that Obama and the Democrats are making America a government-dependent society.

"I really don't want to help somebody who just decides, 'Oh, well, I was raised on welfare. I can raise my children on welfare,' " Malcolm said. "I had a cousin who, she is a registered nurse and the stories she told me about people coming in there and having babies just so they could get more on their food stamps and more on their welfare. It's like no, I don't want to take care of those people."

That's a GOP base voter for you. When in doubt go to old faithful. Obama's taking away their health care and giving it to "those" people, too. And I think we know who those people are, don't we?

Republicans could not go further than center-center right if they wanted to win elections.
Once the social revolutions of the 60's/70's occured, Democrats lost the majority of these voters.
It's not just racial minorities, but women who were given equal rights in the workplace and to their own bodies. In addition, disabled people were given human rights. The majority did not want to see the "others" get anything.

Every time we hear one of these "welfare queen" stories it's from a friend of a relative or a relative of a friend. When someone tries to feed me this line of bull my response is "NAME THEM!"

Don't tell me that so and so heard it from so and so that they were in line at the grocery store and a woman bought fillet mignon with her food stamps and drove off in a new Cadillac. Tell me the woman's name. Show me where she lives. If so and so was so outraged about this nonexistent welfare queen then surely to goodness they got her info to report her to social services. That usually shuts them up, at least around me.

tend to be people who've never been in it. Almost every single person I know who honks on about cutting government and laying off lazy government workers actually holds a government job themselves.
