Georgia governor backs 'heartbeat bill' to restrict abortions

Gov. Brian Kemp put his unequivocal support behind a measure that would ban abortion as soon as a doctor can detect a heartbeat, setting the stage for a showdown in the Georgia House over new restrictions.

Kemp said Thursday in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the bill would help preserve the sanctity of life and uphold campaign promises that he and other Republicans made to restrict abortions.

“I campaigned on signing the toughest abortion bill in the country,” he said, “and this is the toughest one we’ve got in the Legislature now.”

And Kemp said his administration was ready for an inevitable court fight over the legislation if it becomes law.

The virulent pro-life movement (as opposed to those that are pro-life and pro helping the destitute) only want babies born, once that happens, the kid is on his or her own, and if the kid screws up and murder someone, the virulent pro-lifers want him or her killed.
