But Id be interested in hearing from others whove spent sometime in another country in the last 2 years. Not just some westernized resort but out in with the regular population.
My question is how is the US perceived now? Maybe examples of conversations youd had. Havent seen anything lately but when Obama was president the US was seen very favorably. Dont that that is the case any more.

(8,379 posts)And I always tell people that I hate Trump because I have been told that it is better for them to know then to suspect that you might be a supporter. Everyone hates him.

(23,337 posts)Ive visited Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Belize. In my experience, those folks can discern between Americans and our shit show government. People I talked to were sad for us and our state of affairs and hoped wed get our act together and soon. All in all, theyre just trying to do the same things we are...go to work, build a life, care for kids and get food on the table and maybe have a little fun in between and they are not preoccupied with what weve got going on. It was refreshing to be out of the country, I must say.

(23,765 posts)Ivory Coast. Each place I went had to make sure the local folks I met were assured that I did not vote trump, do not support him or any of his policies in any way. Many specially Iceland, Norway, Finland and Germany consider us a laughingstock. The other countries except the UAE were pissed at the US, all wanted to know how in the hell could trump win.
I also spent some time explaining how the electoral college works and made sure that everyone knew that the majority of floks in the last election DID NOT vote for trump.

(58,785 posts)Our kids are traveling a lot more than us. However, your question immediately made me think of Quora, a great site for this kind of thing.
This question from 2018 has 79 answers, almost all from other parts of the world, some so hostile and critical they could have been posted by Americans on American political forums. Off to the right are some links to related questions. There's probably almost no end to discussions that touch on how America and Americans are perceived.

I noticed that more positive ones get the most upvotes by others who apparently agree with the feelings expressed.
Some non-Americans love to bad-mouth the United States. For various reasons that we need not list. But, none of them come as close to being as anti-American as the Americans themselves. Just read their essays, articles, books on American politics, history, and economics, watch the popular documentaries. They go for the throat! If you believe what Americans say about America then at least half the country is sick, immoral and dangerous. ...
We love your food.
You produce amazing works of music, films, television and literature.
We are dumbfounded that so many of you think Donald fucking Trump is a viable president.
We are weirded out by your obsession with owning guns.
Your theme parks rock.
The war on drugs doesnt rock.
We love your optimism.
We are bewildered that you dont have a taxpayer funded health system and think your healthcare costs are astronomical.
Its a great thing that the worlds most powerful country is still (despite everything) a democracy and all its citizens are (theoretically) equal.
Wed be happier if you did more diplomacy and less drone striking.
I could go on, but you get the idea.
