Just finished doing my taxes

Last year, we owed about $9000, mostly because of a legal settlement that we hadn't expected and from which taxes hadn't been fully withheld. Fortunately, we were aware of the issue somewhat in advance and set the money aside. I was terrified that we'd be in a similar situation this year from some of the stores I'd heard.

Bottom line, we owe about $150 net net for federal and state. We did get hurt by the SALT caps. Would have had about $1100 in refunds under the old rules. Also ended up doing better with the standard deduction versus itemizing. So could have been worse, but certainly could have been better.

Standard deduction may have gone up, but it was not enough to offset the elimination of the personal exemptions. Our family of four would have got a bigger refund under the old rules.
