The outage affected users in the US, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia, according to a map by Down Detector. Users of Facebook-owned WhatsApp were also reporting that they were having trouble sending photos on the app.
This isn't Facebook's first outage. In November the social network went down in a mishap caused by a test the company was running. That outage lasted about 40 minutes. That same month, Facebook and Instagram were down for hours because of what Facebook said was a server configuration.
Facebook hasn't revealed what caused the outage, but it said in a tweet Wednesday that it wasn't because of a cyberattack known as a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack where hackers try to crash a site by flooding it with too much traffic.

(12,158 posts)immediate tries I get on easily. I don't have any republican Fb friends to annoy me on Fb. I have kids, grandkids and great-grandkids who keep me entertained with pics and videos, so I like Facebook- especially today in this godawful blizzard!

(34,195 posts)I use it to keep in touch with friends and family.
That's why it bothers me when some people demand FB be shut down due to the news on it.
If they don't like the FB news links, don't read them.

(32,086 posts)Facebook, anyway. I'm not on Instagram, although one can see public accounts from a PC. Some pages come up. Others have an "Ooops" message.
