4. Like Obama, McCain has always been someone whose very life was a reproach to Trump.

Just as Trump needs to undo anything and everything that Obama accomplished, he needs to smear McCain in every way he can. Even now that McCain is dead, Trump still can't let it go.

Remember how he ordered the half-staff flag to be returned to full staff after McCain died? How he was furious that McCain was getting so much attention for dying? Those reactions were just as insane as continuing to smear him months after his death--but he does so many insane and indecent things every day that it's hard for most people to remember them all.
