Do you realize the Boeing 737 MAX 8 gained FAA certification on March 8, 2017.

That was under Trump's administration.
Trump never assigned anyone as administrator because he wanted his personal Trump plane pilot but he wasn't approved.

I wonder if there was lax oversight of the certification process once Trump took over which led to this travesty?

The top guy wouldn’t be questioning the details.
The plan to address the issues after Lion Air is a different story. There, wisdom and judgment from high level people can influence speed and approach.
