A Hamden school district secretary resigned abruptly after a video surfaced that shows her targeting a black man in a racist tirade, district officials said Saturday. The video shows the woman, identified by a school district spokeswoman as Corinne Terrone, repeatedly calling an African-American man the N-word in a supermarket in East Haven on Friday night, a statement on the district website says.
The video also appears to show the Hamden employee spitting at the aforementioned African-American male as he was walking away from the employee, the statement says. It also appears that the school employees children witnessed her conduct.
East Haven police Lt. Joseph Murgo said We are in touch with Shoprite (grocery) and are looking to get a better understanding of what took place last night, Murgo said. At this time, we have not been contacted by anybody directly involved in this matter. We are urging any potential victims of last nights incident to contact us so we can investigate this matter further.
Corinne Terrone was most recently a clerk in the districts central office, and had previously been a clerk at the high school, district spokeswoman Karen Kaplan said. After school officials became aware of the video, the human resources director arranged a meeting with Terrone, who then resigned, Kaplan said.
Such behavior, exhibited in public or private, is completely unacceptable and in conflict with the values of Hamden Public Schools, Kaplan said. Someone who will use that sort of language in any setting, whether public or private, is not someone we want anywhere near our children, the school district statement says.
