I filed my taxes and all I can say WTF!

I am company OTR driver where as I am paid 9 cents for per diem and 35 cents that is taxed! I no longer can deduct any of my out pocket expenses for miscellaneous things, like paper towels, pens, cleaning supplies or other things that I would need to better my comfort in my company owned truck. If I was a contract driver or owned my own truck, I could deduct all those things. To make this thread shorter. I am one of the lucky ones and will get a refund, but only a 1/3 of what I have gotten in the past. It's shameful that this country, those on the right, bow down to the greedy, while the rest of struggle to get what we have coming to us from our tax return!

Gotta love all this "WINNING"!

Planning to work on my taxes this week. I have lots of varied stuff like rental income and gambling income along with investments and traditional. No idea how it will spit out this year. I imagine they screwed me.

... you have to report it as income.

I have heard that casinos and lotteries will withhold taxes from your winnings. I'm not sure about that, because, what are winnings?

I suck at gambling.

In either case, good idea.

Slot trigger is $1,200.

If you have a comp card, the total losses and winnings may be on their record.

Keep losing lottery tix as a proof of loss.

Winnings are income, losses are deductions. If your deductions don't exceed the standard deduction, they're worthless (from a tax perspective).

Effective rate for 2018 was 12.65% versus 15.15% the previous year.

Biggest difference was that it was the first time in three decades that itemizing deductions wasn't the better way to go.

Mrs. Best works a 100% telecommute job and in the past, we were able to deduct all her home office expenses. Not anymore.

We're getting a federal refund (caveat coming), but its significantly down from the past several years. The "caveat" is that I, in anticipation of the tax scam screwing things overall for us folks who are not part of the 1%, doubled the amount of additional withholding in my W-4. Had I not taken this proactive step, the Mrs and I would have owed $$$. Not having the home office deductions really stung us.

When the Dems take over the WH and the Senate, this tax scam is one of the first things that needs to be repealed and replaced.

I am retired, and have only a minimal income based on investments. While that is a fairly comfortable life, things changed dramatically under the Republican tax scam. Last year, I got back just shy of $800. This year, with no change in anything but having really significant medical expenses from open heart surgery, I have to PAY $3,000.

Go ahead Trumpettes.... Try to convince me what a swell thing that tax plan was!

The refund thing is confusing to me. I'm retired now, but I always thought of my taxes in a net percentage of income, not the refund.

I made out like a thief from this new plan, and it should be a crime that I did.

As I promised when they passed that monstrosity of a bill, all of my ill gotten gains are going to Democratic Party Candidates, to the National DNC, my state party, and to battleground state parties.

I knew the abolishment of the AMT was going to benefit me. It should not have.

Even more disgusting is that some people who actually got a little break this year, in 2 years time.. after 2020 election year, their taxes are going back up even higher than before.. but not people like me who should be paying more in taxes to begin with.

vote at all, most claiming facilely that there's no real choice. And a negative minority, but a large one, on the left should be looking back and wondering how much they contributed to that behavior.

Just maybe cuts in refunds -- coupled with increasing taxes this year and next -- will get some off their feckless, dishonest, previously uncaring asses to the polls for a half hour when their next duty rolls around in 1-3/4 years.

And maybe a few who claim to be left but love to push false equalizations about Democrats -- and actually have the nerve to blame us for not stopping conservatives from being conservatives -- will be slapped down just a bit more by people who have lost their tolerance.

Have no idea how it will work out. I'm retired, have SS, a small pension, and income from investments. Last year I started taking income from a couple of annuities, and that money might be taxable.

The past two years I have not had to pay federal or state income taxes, which is nice. I suspect I will be in the same situation this year because of the increase in the standard deduction. I'll find out.

Let’s say the reversal of fortune was tRump inpired: the agent at ADP who figured out deductions for the nonprofit where I was working got confused by the new tax guidelines and treated every employee at our place as exempt, which meant no Fed tax was withheld. As we all had direct deposit - and as there had never been a problem before - we just assumed things were normal. I was expecting a refund this year. I nearly fell over when I got my W2 to see that only $161 had been withheld in Fed tax.

Needless to say, I don't have that kind of $ sitting around. Looks like we’ll be paying in installments and incuring penalties.

We will be getting $1500 back in our CA state taxes.

Talk to you HR about setting up an accountable reimbursement plan for that 9 cents (or some portion of it). They can then reimburse you for your expenses, and those expenses are still deductible on their taxes.
