I could not agree more. In 1982 my dental insurance at the time had a $1000 cap and that covered a lot. Today, that amount of money will hardly cover 50 percent of any major dental work. Today my husband and I have a dental plan that I kept after state government employment. It has a $1500 cap annually. We also are insured with MET LIFE dental, a Veterans dental program available to ANY veteran (and their spouse) who gets their care at the VAMC. It is not the same as those veterans whose entire dental care is free at the VA itself because the veteran is totally disabled. Our Met Life dental policy has a $3500 annual cap, reasonable premiums, and a very good selection of in network dentists.
I wanted to let everyone know about another dental plan I came across on the internet when my sister and her husband needed a dental plan to cover the other 50 percent of major dental work as their plan only covered 50 percent which still left a lot of money to pay. Spirit Dental is an individual dental plan that covers implants (if the tooth is removed while you have the policy)and most other dental work. It goes by calendar year, so to enroll in April, it would be coverage at 25 percent, with preventive covered at 100 percent. In January of 2020 this will increase to 50 percent. They enrolled in November of 2018 and this past January 2019 , they were in year 2 of their policy! It covered their needed dental work at 50 percent too, so they had only a small deductible to pay. The dentists in the program are very good dentists. Spirit dental uses the Ameritus network, which where we live has excellent dentists and specialists. I wanted to share this info because the cost of dental care has risen almost as much as the cost of medical care, and overall health is affected by oral health.

But, I could use relining, a small repair or two, and maybe just a new set. I asked at my local VA and they said now way, no how. Even if I was willing to pay.

(804 posts)Veterans Administration Dental Insurance Program. It is for veterans who get care at VA but are not 100 percent disabled. The program has Met Life and Delta Dental to choose from. There are premiums, but I think they are reasonable. The biggest advantage is that, like group plans, there is not a waiting period for most services.
