Got the email yesterday. This week is SOL week.
Oh SOL stands for Standards of Learning. Virginia's standardized testing. Yeah no one NOBODY apparently mentioned (or it was ignored) "You DO know what SOL means, right?"
This name was chosen during the Jim Gilmore time as Governor.

(36,440 posts)A real slick and imaginative name - Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Way back when my son was in fourth grade, we met his teacher and she became real animated when she discovered who we were. She informed us she just received the results from Star testing and told us our son was reading at post high school level. I asked her when they stopped teaching reading in school. True story.

(51,607 posts)Same Old Lack of learning. Teaching to the test and testing itself have taken time away from real teaching. In CA we had to test First Graders one on one and whole class throughout the school year. The question becomes, "When do you teach the actual content in the tests?". We teach how to take a test and specifically toward the test so that the student succeeds? Hell no...it is NOT about student success. It IS about money for the district and that particular school. A 6 year old kid shouldn't be tested 50% of their time in school.
