COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Fish in an Ohio river that became synonymous with pollution when it caught fire in 1969 are now safe to eat, federal environmental regulators say.
The easing of fish consumption restrictions on the Cuyahoga River in northeast Ohio was lauded Monday by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine as an important step toward ultimately delisting the river altogether as an area of concern. Seven impairments remain to be addressed before that can happen.
This is an example of the progress that can be achieved when you collaborate and dedicate resources to improving the quality of water in our state, DeWine said in a statement. We need to continue to invest in our water resources so that we can see additional improvements.
The announcement came as DeWine is pushing a state budget that includes nearly $1 billion for water quality projects aimed at cleaning up toxic algae in Lake Erie and protecting other lakes and rivers in the state.

(11,949 posts)Before the Clean Water Act passes. With bipartisan support because even conservatives favored a clean environment back then. Now many of them are going full steam back to those bad old days.
I fear my new governor has found a dangerous new weapon for the right. DeSantis has been unbelievably good on the environment. Shit canned all of Skeletors corporate lackeys and replaced them with real environmental believers on ever board he has the powers to do so. Putting money into the environment. It has given him real cover as he takes the state government even further to the right on economic and social positions.
Fortunately I cant see the National Republicans following his playbook. They are funded by people who hate environmental laws. The oil drilling industry is detested here across the board giving DeSantis cover.
On edit: when I say unbelievably good I mean for a republican. A Democratic Governor could much more especially concerning controlling growth. But he has not given any of the strictly environmental groups that focus on nothing else much room to complain.
