3. It is true, or at least trending that way

The U.S. currently produces about 12 million barrels of crude oil per day, up nearly 50% from production in the 80's. Most of that is due to shale production. Say what you will about that - it's a different discussion. The problem is that different barrels of oil produced in different places have different properties. They are not freely interchangeable.

Fracking produces light sweet crude oil but most of our refineries - at least in the Gulf of Mexico region - are designed to refine heavy sour crude. That type of oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico and is also imported, mostly from the Middle East, Canada and Venezuela. Our production growth is in the type of crude we don't use so we export it. There are projects underway that will enable some of the refineries in Texas to use light sweet crude from the Permian and Eagle Ford shale fields but production keeps increasing too so imports will likely grow as well.

Meanwhile, sanctions against Iran and Venezuela have reduced the amount of heavy sour crude in the global supply, making it, and your gasoline that's made from it, more expensive.

4. The EIA reports that in 2017 the US consumed 20 Mbbl/dy of petroleum (equivalent) product

Exported 6.1 Mbbl/dy, Imported 10.1 Mbbl/dy.

Therefore we produced 16.0 Mbbl/dy.

Meaning, we imported 4.0 Mbbl/dy.

Yet, US production in 2018 is stated as 13.3 Mbbl/day (pet and NGL). Ballpark balance, but still.
