John McCain Torpedoed Trump's Attempt to Get Federal Aid For Luxury Housing in 1996

This definitely offers a reason for Trump's animus toward McCain, starting decades ago.

From Mediaite:

https://www.mediaite.com/online/john-mccain-torpedoed-trumps-attempt-to-get-federal-aid-for-luxury-housing-in-1996/

But Trump’s hostility toward McCain goes back long before he infamously attacked the former prisoner of war’s military service during the 2016 presidential campaign by saying McCain was “a war hero cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

He made a similar attack in 1999, telling Dan Rather McCain “was captured. Does being captured make you a hero? I don’t know. I’m not sure.”

Three years before that, though, it was John McCain who took aim at Trump over the then-real estate developer’s application for federal mortgage guarantees. In a statement that was submitted for the record on McCain’s behalf, the then-senator singled Trump out while submitting an amendment to an appropriations bill.

In the statement, McCain noted that HUD “is processing an application from a team of developers, headed by the venerable Donald Trump, to obtain Federal Housing Authority mortgage guarantees for their luxury apartment development in Manhattan known as Riverside South.”

“The HUD program to which Mr. Trump and his associates are applying for assistance is intended to promote development within urban renewal areas,” McCain continued. “To help qualify for the aid, Mr. Trump’s group has pledged to reserve 20 percent of the units for low- and moderate-income residents.”

“The issuance of the Federal mortgage guarantee and the 20 percent low-income reserve will entitle Mr. Trump and his partners to a vast array of municipal tax benefits, which one group calculates to be in the range of nearly $4.5 million per ‘needy’ individual assisted–not exactly what most Americans would consider cost-effective use of Government assistance,” McCain wrote.

“I certainly have nothing against luxury apartments nor do I have anything against very successful project developers, including Mr. Trump,” McCain said. “I do object, however, to asking the taxpayer to bear the risk of a development for one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in the country, to help finance a project that will predominantly benefit upper income Americans.”

He noted that if Trump’s proposal were approved, “taxpayers will be on the hook for over $350 million,” and that those taxpayers “will take this enormous risk–the largest ever in the history of the program–to help provide housing, in some instances, for people who earn an annual income of over $200,000 per year.”

McCain went on to say that “the Donald Trumps of the world can more than afford to bear the risk of their endeavors, and should not be indemnified with taxpayer dollars.”

The amendment that McCain proposed was approved unanimously, via voice vote.

Many many thanks, dem, something finally makes SENSE

Remember Richard Branson’s account of having lunch with trump years back? Branson hardly knew him, but went to TT for lunch with him, and the entire time, trump regaled him with stories of who he hated and why, how he was going to exact revenge on them all, and there was just no end to his grousing. Branson was appalled at what a vengeful, petty man trump was.

Not to mention booorrring

Some shit don’t never change, eh

yes, I remember Richard Branson talking about how obsessed with revenge Trump is.

David Cay Johnston wrote a lot about that in his book The Making of Donald Trump. The excerpt below is from an article at BillyMoyers, com on the book, and it includes a snippet from the book:

https://billmoyers.com/story/making-donald-trump-told-journalistic-nemesis/

Vindictiveness is a point of pride for Trump, Johnston said. “His personal motto is ‘get revenge,’” said the reporter, who devotes an entire chapter to Trump’s speechifying and writings on the subject. Describing how Trump fired a female employee who, citing ethical qualms, wouldn’t call a banker friend on his behalf, Johnston quotes Trump’s own account from his book, Think Big:

“She ended up losing her home. Her husband, who was only in it for the money, walked out on her and I was glad… I can’t stomach disloyalty…and now I go out of my way to make her life miserable.”

Editing to add that the excerpt is from Chapter 3 of Johnston's book, "Personal Values," which opens by descriing a motivational talk Trump gave in 2005 in Colorado, a rambling expletive-laced rant where he sniped at former wives and business associates, but eventurally laid out two recommendations on how to succeed: Trust no one. And get revenge. "Get even. If somebody screws you, you screw 'em back ten times over. At least you can feel good about it. Boy, do I feel good."

Luxury realtors get all kinds of tax breaks to build huge glass boxes if they promise to set aside some small number of units for lower income. They take our neighborhoods and raise the rent values of nearby properties, thereby causng eviction of us ordinary people. To build these ugly condos and hotels they raze the homes of people who've lived in them for decades.

Locals consider it one of the bigger scams and fight it every day. But we're losing.
