He made the remarks during an interview with Mark Levin.
Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) promised that he would file more lawsuits to come after people who defame him and other politicians on Twitter.
Nunes made the remarks during an interview with Mark Levin, where he discussed his lawsuit against Twitter. It was pointed out by The Democratic Coalition, a left-leaning PAC, on Wednesday evening.
Sorry you just dont get to defame politicians and put it out on Twitter anymore, the California lawmaker said. I mean, you can do it. But Im gonna come after you.
Nunes filed a lawsuit against Twitter earlier this week, seeking $250 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, alleging that conservatives were being shadow banned. He also pointed to several parody accounts that were made for the sole purpose of attack, defaming, disparaging, and demeaning him. Fox News first reported on the lawsuit.
The lawsuit also seeks to have the identities of those running the parody accounts released.
During the interview, the California lawmaker promised to file more lawsuits in the coming weeks, likely what he was referring to when he said he could come after people. He said he expects suits to be filed about every two weeks.
Im going to go after all these fake news stories, and these social media giantsor the tech oligarchs as I call themand Im going to go after them. The only way I have to do it is through the courts, he said.

(16,094 posts)If the judge decides these are frivolous lawsuits can't they make Nunes foot the bill for all court and plaintiff legal fees?

(2,484 posts)A strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition.
[1] Such lawsuits have been made illegal in many jurisdictions on the grounds that they impede freedom of speech.
In the typical SLAPP, the plaintiff does not normally expect to win the lawsuit. The plaintiff's goals are accomplished if the defendant succumbs to fear, intimidation, mounting legal costs, or simple exhaustion and abandons the criticism. In some cases, repeated frivolous litigation against a defendant may raise the cost of directors and officers liability insurance for that party, interfering with an organization's ability to operate.[2] A SLAPP may also intimidate others from participating in the debate. A SLAPP is often preceded by a legal threat.
There is a difficulty in that plaintiffs do not present themselves to the court admitting that their intent is to censor, intimidate, or silence their critics. Hence, the difficulty in drafting SLAPP legislation, and in applying it, is to craft an approach which affords an early termination to invalid abusive suits, without denying a legitimate day in court to valid good faith claims. Thus, anti-SLAPP laws target tactics used by SLAPP plaintiffs. Common anti-SLAPP laws include measures such as penalties for plaintiffs who file lawsuits ruled frivolous and special procedures where a defendant may ask a judge to consider that a lawsuit is a SLAPP (and usually subsequently dismiss the suit).

(47,649 posts)He's inviting every late night talk show host and comedian to double down on the ridicule. When Colbert started "Devin Nunes' Skin", he looked at the camera and said, "Sue me".
Nunes doesn't realize he is just giving comedians a gift!

(101,391 posts)There's no way he could argue he's actually lost $250m, or the equivalent of that (is he putting a price on being minority leader or something?) from a few insults on Twitter, or even 'shadowbanning' if it were real. Since he and his lawyer are idiots, I can see they want Twitter punished for allowing him to be insulted, but that should be in the punitive damages, by definition.
