BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 03/22/19 06:00 AM EDT
Republicans are seizing on the Democratic fight over expanding the Supreme Court as they look for leverage in the 2020 White House fight.
The intra-party debate is seen by Republicans as a political gift that could pay dividends after several presidential candidates signaled they are open to adding justices to the bench or imposing term limits.
GOP strategists and conservative activists say the progressive push to expand the Supreme Court fits nicely into the broader Republican narrative about Democrats swinging too far to the left. And its an issue they view as a political boon.
Carrie Severino, the chief counsel and policy director for the Judicial Crisis Network, said Democrats are desperate and chasing each other off a cliff to the left by debating the issue of expanding the Supreme Court.
In many ways, I think this is something that is going to turn off so many voters because it is so baldly political that maybe one option is to give them enough rope and let them hang themselves, she said when asked how Republicans should respond.

OP
The Republicans, as they no longer need 60 votes ? Do they need a bill to expand it ? If so,

(111,110 posts)1. Since the Repubs now have it packed in their political favor...
....why would they want to change it?
The goal is to keep the Supreme Court from following the dictates of any political Party.

We want to expand the court to make it more neautral?
I dont think boldly lying is a wise political ploy - though it has worked for trump.

Heres the problem. What if McConnell presents a bill to expand the court today? Do we agree?

then it's a non issue alright. That said, lucky they didn't try it before the midterms.

(5,624 posts)2. this isn't going to work if dems know the constitution. Nothing says you can't expand the SC.
