Kurt Schlichter: Liberals Want To Ban Meat Because Doing So Sparks Joy

Kurt Schlichter, a right-wing pundit and the author of a book reminiscent of the “Turner Diaries,” cited Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” proposal and the fact that Sen. Cory Booker is a vegan to allege that Democrats want to remove meat from America simply because such exercises of power are “their joy.”

Schlichter recorded yet another pedantic video for Canadian far-right outlet Rebel Media about the asinine claim that Democrats want to pry hamburgers from American hands. That claim, as foolish as it truly is, has been peddled as a serious talking point among many right-wing figures who hope to reduce popular support for environmental protection regulation to an absurd punchline.

Schlichter seems to have forgotten that he has already published a video about this topic.

“They want to be able to tell us no. They want to be able to tell us how to live, how to think, what to feel. They do that in everything. Why not meat? Of course, meat!” Schlichter said. “It’s something we really like. It’s something we identify. It’s part of our culture. If they can take that away, that is an exercise of power.”

He continued, “For some people, exercising power is everything. It’s their joy.”

WTF? I'll gladly eat a double bacon cheeseburger right in front of him.

5. They also claimed the meat-eating Obamas wanted to ban meat

right after they took away the guns.

They have a whole conspiracy theory around how banning meat and making us eat more soy will somehow make people weaker and easier to control.

I’ve been meat-free and eating soy for thirty years and I’m still a completely uncontrollable asshole.

The notion that he can tell me what I think is highly risible.

Get a giant pot, fill it with water, cut up some fresh vegetables and put it in said pot, build a nice fire under the pot, and ask them to climb in...

11. This is actually a good idea. Veganism is much better for the environment.

But it also improves your health. Cancer rates almost disappear if you are 100% vegan.

and even I don’t believe it can prevent cancer to such a degree. That’s the kind of hyperbole that makes vegans look foolish.

There are no doubt some people within the coalition of Democratic and leftist people who want to ban meet. PETA comes to mind as well as some people who are staunch, political vegans. The reality however, is that the current systems of meat production are not good for the environment. That is a problem that needs to be addressed and soon because of the impact that meet, especially beef production has on the air quality and water levels and quality. There are ways of producing meat that decrease the negative impact but which would raise prices possibly making it not affordable to anyone but the richest among us. There are also scientific advancements in meat production but again, they are not economically viable and would likely create a reaction in the consumer of rejection.

It isn't that people on the left "get joy" from telling people no. It is like parents. Saying no is actually way more work than just letting your kids do what they want, but you know that if you let your kid stay up till 2am playing video games and let them eat hot Cheetos for breakfast every day that there are going to be significant consequences.

I am an avid meat eater. I have tried when economically affordable, to get my meat from sustainable sources. I have cut back on consumption, but my efforts alone are not enough, and as I said, they are not consistent because if I can pay 4.99 or 5.99 per pound for a cut of meat from a reasonably sustainable place, I won't pay 15.99 per pound for the same cut of meat from a strictly sustainable source.

Change has to be systemic to really make an impact. Right wingers either don't get that, or don't care. Very likely both.

17. Classic right-wing modus operandi: Grab all the power, but still claim "victimhood."

Republicans/RWers ALWAYS scream, cry and carry on about how victimized they are, moaning endlessly about how unbearably hard it is to be a liberty-loving patriot (gag) while enduring everything from (gasp!) a “war on Christmas” to an amorphous “deep state” that undermines all their heroic efforts.

And with Trump being the loudest and most egregious “victim,” they’ve become insufferable. I used to trust in Americans’ ability to use common sense, but no more.
