General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsRight now, by and large, the media is acting like "the enemy of the people"
Just as they did in the run up to the Iraq war.
The media abhors an information vacuum. Rather than focusing on the KNOWN facts contained in Meuller's indictments, they magnify the message in Barr's memo, which contains, IIRC, TWO PARTIAL SENTENCES ACTUALLY QUOTING MEULLER'S REPORT. So instead, we get an orgy of masturbatory speculation, crafting and framing the narrative just the way Trump and Barr want it to be framed.
Example:
Instead of saying "Trump is celebrating this report as a victory", (reporting a factual event), we get:
"this is a big victory for the president" (adding meaning and framing to an event).
The narrative that should be the focus of the reporting, until the report is released to the public (don't hold your breath) is that Meuller has placed the responsibility for protecting the Constitution squarely in the lap of Congress. It is now Congress's job to gather all the available evidence, not just from Meuller, but from interviewing everyone remotely involved with the most corrupt administration in thei history of the USA.
Instead, the media reports "nothing to see here, move along" and "if the Democrats push this too hard with investigations, they will hand the 2020 election to Trump".
Just as it's the job of Congress to hold the Executive branch accountable, it's the job of the media to hold the government accountable, and, right now, they are failing miserably.

This is premature.
Unless of course you trust Barr.

(33,643 posts)He said 'did not establish collusion w/the Russian Government' ...
What exactly does 'establish' mean? Does that mean 'no evidence' or does it mean 'not enough evidence to establish guilt of a prosecutable crime, beyond a reasonable doubt, in court of law?'
There's a WIDE area in between those two ideas. And we don't know where it falls, nobody but a handful of people do, which does not include Ari.
And the people he and his peeps colluded with don't have to be, like members of Russian Congress or Judiciary FFS. Anybody that they had reason to believe were affiliated with the Russian Government is bad enough (Natalia, anyone?) ... at minimum for the Public to READ ABOUT when we see THE REPORT.

(4,612 posts)the facts and meaning of not only somewhat complicated legal jargon and assessment but also the rationale and ramifications of legal decisionmaking.
You can bet that Bill Barr and others in the Trump Administration know this. They are taking advantage of a gaping hole in the capabilities and structural limitations of our media reporting.

(8,419 posts)The host at 6:00 AM (Pacific) was horrible, forget her name, and have no interest to go look, because she is always a right wing shill. But then Katie Tur came on. Yesterday she challenged everyone to step up including the media. Do their jobs and make sure the truth comes out. The first 10 minutes of her show were despicable. The pResident was exonerated, did the Dems push too hard? It was like she got a memo first thing with her talking points and followed them to the letter.
