On Monday night, the Trump administration announced that it now supports a ruling from a Texas judge that would invalidate the entire Affordable Care Act -- aka Obamacare -- a move that almost certainly will push the fight over how health care is delivered in this country to the Supreme Court.
"The Department of Justice has determined that the district court's comprehensive opinion came to the correct conclusion and will support it on appeal," said Kerri Kupec, a spokesperson for the Justice Department.

Trump has spent the entire first two years of his presidency playing to his hardcore base -- and, seen through that lens, the decision to re-litigate the ACA fight makes some sense. But Trump won't win a second term solely on the strength of his base. And by picking the Obamacare scab, Trump is energizing and inflaming Democrats and many independents. And that is a major political mistake.

(905 posts)It's already happened and now they work on harassment. I pay a fortune and have to pay the first $8000 on everything. I am going to get rid of it myself.
Under Obama it worked well and was affordable now it is being blown up from the inside out.
I am out!

(10,252 posts)Maybe he feels emboldened to finally destroy the signature Obama accomplishment, given that he can't lock Hillary up.
I guess we could play a game -- how stupid is this? More stupid than a bag of hammers.
ya know, there were Republicans out there who ran on supporting medical insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions. Do ya think they soiled their knickers, when they heard this onb the news this morning. Looks like a lot of fun watching them try to spin this one.

(25,473 posts)Though, as we've learned, you never know with Trump. He's done hundreds - or thousands - of things that should have already doomed his presidency and taken the GOP down along with it.

(13,613 posts)coverage for everyone. A little at least. He had to say something after the "build the wall" and "lock her up" chants died down. His base doesn't seem to have paid much attention to that.

(28,342 posts)Trump made it very clear he wanted to punish Obama for laughing at him, for being so popular, for having a bigger inauguration, for his incredible approval numbers and for being praised by historians for successfulness of his presidency.
He wants to smite Obama, remove his name, erase him from all things like an ancient Pharaoh.

(6,709 posts)And if they succeed in destroying the ACA, a comprehensive plan will be front and center for Ds --all of them--running for office. It may turn out that we will have rump to thank for a better, cheaper system...once he's gone. Oh the irony!

(68,632 posts)I still believe this. We have to get the senate.and we may not. Millions of folks will suffer. And people over 50 will lose jobs. Also what folks don't know is this lawsuit will create pre- existing conditions for work insurance and Medicare.

(6,709 posts)I think if we lose the ACA the backlash will sweep away the pukes from the Senate and rump from the WH--especially if it messes up work insurance, Medicare and pre-existing conditions. I think the resulting tsunami will increase our House majority as well, despite gerrymandering and despite cheating. A minority position can only hold back the tide for so long; keep chipping away at the levee and eventually the wave will wash right over your head.
I think the Republicans are that stupid and arrogant; that clueless, callous, and cruel. Yes, millions will suffer. Millions are already suffering, including the 30? 40?* million who have nothing now, plus those that have insurance but can't afford to use it. The rules are bewildering and exploitable by the insurance companies (and who could have predicted that?) (everybody) and there is no mechanism for cost control. And now rump and the pukes have sabotaged it so badly I'm surprised it is still standing at all.
We need something WAY better than the ACA. If the pukes succeed in taking it away, we may finally get it. IF the Democrats are ready and willing. It is time to step up. Fix this, and the Republicans won't have a chance to say sh!t for a generation (as they didn't after the New Deal btw). They will be lost in the wilderness of obsolete parties, wandering and verklempt...which may be enough time for them to straighten themselves the eff out. Certainly no one else can do it.
What did JFK say? "Those who make peaceful evolution impossible will make violent evolution inevitable." I don't think people will be rioting outside Congress to force the passage of universal health care--but I DO think that a massive transformation of our system is already on the table, and will accelerate if the pukes succeed in their mission. They should be very VERY careful what they wish for.

(68,632 posts)Most likely my 22 year old daughter would die. And onlyb17% want MFA if workplace insurance goes away. So we wouldn't get it anyway.

(6,709 posts)And who says that the only alternative is "MFA if workplace insurance goes away"? That's a strawman. I said we needed to be ready, if the fuckheads in the DoJ and on the SC succeed in overturning the ACA. You act like our preferences have something to do with that, which they don't. At.All.
They are sufficiently stupid AND evil to screw up the entire medical system, such as it is. If they do, do you think people will continue to be happy? Do you think people like dealing with insurance companies? Do you think businesses like dealing with insurance companies? Doctors? Hospitals? They don't.
Again, if these asshats succeed, do you think everyone will just sit back and do nothing? And btw, "everyone" includes a lot of Trump voters, particularly the ones who remember the promise of universal, better and cheaper health care.
This is the stupidest move rump could have made, and we have to be ready with a real alternative. What ever it is (for me I think optional Medicare buy-in for everyone would be the intermediate step).

It's pretty dumb now that more Americans have grown to like the key provisions of the law and know people who have benefited. I believe it builds up a constituency who will support further reforms like single payer.
DU used to have a lot of ACA opponents who believed we could get single payer faster without it. Now's their chance to shine but most have disappeared.
