WASHINGTON The U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution directing the Justice Department to give Congress all records on FBI obstruction of justice or counterintelligence probes against President Donald Trump.
In a surprising show of bipartisanship, days after U.S. Attorney General William Barr told Congress he did not find an obstruction case against Trump, the Democratic-led panel voted 22-0 to send the measure to the full House of Representatives for a possible floor vote.
Full House approval would give Barr 14 days to comply with the demand for all records and communications concerning FBI investigations of Trump, as well as any discussions within the Justice Department about secretly recording the president or seeking to replace him by invoking the 25th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Lawmakers are looking specifically at obstruction of justice and counterintelligence probes that former FBI Director Andrew McCabe says he launched after Trump fired his predecessor, James Comey, in May 2017.

(1,588 posts)Can't be sitting around with nothing to do. All work right now is just preliminary. No votes will be cast until 2021 anyway. All decisions between now and then are to be made by the Executive branch and the Supreme Court.

(30,613 posts)They are hoping that the FISA warrants will show that...somehow... somebody was investigated and therefore...something? I don't quite get the tale they've been spinning about that for 2 years, but apparently their Deplorables are sucking it right up. Maybe it's something to do with HillaryPizzaGateBenghazi?

(4,007 posts)they will be screwed, tattooed and blued before they can mount a counter-defense. Getting all the details out sooner than later allows a more spirited defense and even a 'principled' defense (if that's even possible!) against Trumpian policies so they can say see, we didn't crumble in deference.

(11,990 posts)It's not like they're passing a law. If the House votes to demand documents, does the Senate need to get involved at all?
