Tone Loc goes viral over confederate hat

This happened about 40 miles north of me in Ashtabula Ohio. Rapper Tone Loc got into a shouting match with a young man and his mother over his wearing a hat with the confederate flag.

The mother and her boyfriend got involved and defended the boy, who turned out to be a minor, with the usual talking points about "heritage" and how the Civil War was about so much more than race. The police arrived, handcuffed Tone Loc, and put him up against a brick wall while talking with the family. They didn't let him go until the others left. No charges were filed.

It's too long to post here, but really well worth reading the whole thing at the link:

Airport dispute goes viral as Ashtabula County teen, rapper Tone Loc get in confrontation over confederate hat

An Ashtabula County Commissioner's son found himself at the center of a verbal altercation with hip hop artist Tone Loc in a Texas airport — an incident that received national media attention — after the rapper questioned why the teen was wearing a hat with a confederate flag on it.

Loc, whose real name is Anthony Smith and is known for hits such as "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina," was detained by police outside the Midland International Airport March 23 after getting into an expletive-filled exchange with a woman, a man and two teens, according to a video and reporting by the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

The woman was Amber Thompson, a native of Ashtabula County who now lives in Texas, said County Commissioner Kathryn Whittington. Whittington's son, 16, was on a spring break trip with his friend to visit Thompson, his friend's mother.

"They were verbally accosted by Tone Loc in the Midland airport," Whittington said.

She said her son was wearing a hat that said "Rebel" with the confederate flag in the lettering. Whittington, who was not on the trip, said the hat offended Loc and the rapper began to shout vulgarities at them.

"This was (her son's) first time flying," Whittington said. "The experience did not end well, not to mention he's a minor."

gets offended when called out on being a racist pig.

I got news for the racist pig. Yes the confederate flag is a symbol of white supremacy and if you haven't taught your teen son that by now, expect more confrontations like that in the future. He ain't always going to be a teen.

That boy and his parents are either extremely ignorant, extremely racist, or both. The battle flag of Northern Virginia is not the Confederate flag. It wasn't even used continuously as any kind of symbol of "Southern heritage". After the Civil War, the flag was only used in some films about the Civil War and did not become a symbol until Strom Thurmond started using it in 1948 more than 80 years after the end of the war. It was used almost exclusively to defy integration of Southern society, so bull shit on that "Southern Heritage" claim.

Loc had as much right to comment on the hat as that 16 year old had to wear it. You wear a symbol of hate, expect someone to say something about it. The mother coming out saying, "My poor 16 year old kid" I am sorry but if your kid, less than 2 years removed from legal adulthood, is wearing a racist symbol then he is game for discussion. The kid isn't a victim.

the Confederate flag is about heritage, not hate.

That's the shit I used to see on raggedy ass pickup trucks in east Texas. What those ignorant dipshits ignore, or are too stupid to understand is, the heritage is built on hate.
