Look, New Yorkers saw this every day-- Trump being a nasty little boy trying to fit in with the adults. We can't entirely blame the rest of the country for seeing him as the shining knight from outside politics coming in to clean up the mess, but we can blame the country, and the Republican Party, for refusing to admit they were wrong.

if this kind of thing is a manifestation of Trump's personality disorder, a slip revealing aspirations for a future authoritarian takeover, throwing his base the anti-democracy bombast they love and reward, to distract the press from other issues, a sign of predementia, or just wishful thinking.
