An unvaccinated Kentucky student lost his lawsuit challenging a ban placed on kids without vaccines.
Jerome Kunkel, 18, a senior at Assumption Academy in Boone County, Kentucky sued the Northern Kentucky Independent District Board of Health after it prohibited students without current vaccines from attending school and after-school activities during a chickenpox outbreak.
A judge sided with the health department on Tuesday when he ruled that the ban could remain in place. Students at the school in Walton, Kentucky, are experiencing an outbreak of chickenpox. As of March 14, there were 32 confirmed cases, according to the health department.
Kunkel has refused to get the chickenpox vaccine. He argues that his religious beliefs prevent him from receiving vaccines produced using cell lines derived from aborted fetuses generations ago as is the case with the chickenpox vaccine.
The National Catholic Bioethics Center says the vaccine is OK because it doesn't actually contain aborted cells.

(51,613 posts)all of us did in 1993 (before the vaccine). We were in our 40s and 30s and that is not a good thing if you are a guy since it can make you sterile. When I became a teacher I was sick all the time. If this happened at my school I would refuse to work in a room with a non vaccinated student for my own health. My district made all kids have up to date shots/vaccines, thank goodness.

(205,664 posts)He also worked for my Dad and I remember he was out of work for a very long time and everyone was worried. I'm guessing he was in his 40s or 50s at the time and it was pretty serious.
I'm sorry that you also got so sick. I was just a kid when I got them in the "60s, but it was pretty damn uncomfortable. My friend returned to school a few years back and was required to get the MMR vaccine. I thought that everyone everywhere was required to at this point. The illness is quite dangerous for adults and it's only a good thing that there's a vaccine available now.

(10,952 posts)as a child and then a really bad second round as an adult. You do not want to get chicken pox as an adult, it was miserable. Someone told me that I look like someone had attacked me with an ice pick. 14 spots the first time and I was covered with it the second time.
You know what makes it even worse? Taking a hot shower. The Doctor didn't warn me to stay away from hot showers. I had spots popping out like you wouldn't believe.

(205,664 posts)And I didn't know you could get them a second time! That sounds perfectly awful! What I remember about my Dad's friend was that he was out of work for a very long time and everyone was worried about him. Since there's a vaccine available now, it only makes sense that it would be required for everyone. I can't believe that anyone would choose to get them - and by refusing the vaccine these idiots expose others.

(7,525 posts)When I got the chicken pox, my younger brother was jealous that I got to stay home from school for a week and complained that he wanted to get the chicken pox. When he got them a few days later, he didn't want them anymore.
