"Wholesale decapitation."
This is utter chaosand a likely sign that far worse is around the corner.

From an unnamed administrator official
There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nations second-largest national security agency.
So far this includes:
Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary of Homeland Security
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Francis Cissna
Office of the General Counsels John Mitnick
Secret Service director Randolph Tex Alles
Immigration and Customs Enforcement director-nominee Ron Vitiello
According to CNN, Trump recently empowered Stephen Miller to lead the administrations border policies and Miller is starting out with what amounts to a wholesale decapitation of the Department of Homeland Security leadership.

(2,690 posts)Trump is in a race against time here. He and Herr Miller have to stay ahead of the wave of legitimate investigations that might affect The Leader's hold on the throne. Never mind the fact that the only way for Trump to maintain control is by seriously diminishing the value of the country -- by "third worlding" it -- the issue is power, ruthlessly seized and ruthlessly held.
He's already laid claim to the military (a dubious claim, but not without some truth), the police (not so dubious a claim), and a gaggle of middle-aged, beer-swilling bikers (who cares? at least who cares, as long as Miller doesn't find a way to develop them and others like them into a thug-army of Brown Shirts).
The slide to chaos and Trumpian fascism has already begun, this is clear to me. And Trump is not shackled at all by law or precedent. He does what he wants whenever he feels like doing it. Nadler, et al., meanwhile, have to work carefully through legal procedures. The question is -- one of the questions, at any rate -- does the Democratic Congress have the time to expose the coup planned and being carried out by this hateful administration? Or will Trump effectively seize total control before Congress has time to nail him?

On edit: I know anything he does is to make us more vulnerable so he can get away with more too.

(61,695 posts)after 9-11-01, possibly after the big 911 Commission Report on terrorism was written, because intelligence agencies had communicated or coordinated the flow of information very poorly. DHS was supposed to end that.
Just my opinion, but DHS shouldn't be involved directly in border security. Border Security is an immigration or State Dept matter, IMO, until a suspected terrorist is found, and then turned over to the FBI.

(23,954 posts)for 2 years he's been capable of pulling this lever but didn't, possibly because "the time wasn't right" or maybe "Trump is just too goddam stupid to understand". and so we've had a nice gentle push into the abyss of totalitarianism, rather than a full-tilt plunge. once he's re-tuned leadership in all sectors to match the whims of his base, and with complicit support from go-along Republicans, the laws of our republic will scatter like a house of cards in a strong breeze.
