For trump*, the only thing that really matters is trump*, and I'm willing to bet that he's desperate to wrestle more support his way. This whole dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security activity points to one thing: he's setting us up for something catastrophic event, counting on the national fear and outrage will work in his favor. Hey, it worked for Bush. But, at least Bush didn't have a policy of playing cozy with despots while alienating leaders of democracies.
There really isn't ANYTHING I'd put past this guy and his bevy of greed fascists and I'm starting to get really, really nervous.

(16,887 posts)I agree that this whole dismantling and destabilizing of our Government in general has been worrisome for the last two years with the only peace of mind I had was in November when the Democrats took back Congress.
But the dismantling in the last 72 hours of the Dept of Homeland Security has me really unnerved and I can also only conclude that he and his ilk are setting up the US for a catastrophic security event.
We should all be nervous.

(7,142 posts)it works with our cyber security, it keeps the bad guys from hacking our power grid or other infrastructure or military installations or anything that is computerized. DHS protects us from hackers and the dismantling of the agency by Trump puts out a welcome mat to our enemies.

(50,278 posts)they would probably blame the Mexicans and anyone else who is brown and south of the border. Especially if the real perpetrators were funding the Trump and Kushner companies. And to think the nut has nukes . . . (Sorry - that didn't help, did it? LOL.)

Sorry - that didn't help my POV either.

(9,734 posts)So we can rant, scream, yell spit-filled epithets at cancer causing windmills, fantasize about the several ways politicians have been handled in the past happening today and just generally be able to get it all out and not get into any trouble with anyone.
Dont think it could be online though...think Ill run out into the forest and start screaming to get out the burning anger...kneel down and cry like a frightened child with the memories of my friends and close buddies that gave their all thinking their sacrifice would keep our country safe from dangers such as we are seeing destroy it today...then honor that sacrifice working hard to clean out the russian cesspool that invaded the seat of our government.

(9,426 posts)Chinese spies have already visited this country? The one discovered at Mar-A-Lago surely is one of many. Not all terrorists try to cross the border. Many of them fly in and roam freely. Of course if they are Russian or Asian this administration sees no problem as long as they bring MONEY.

I could be (and often am) wrong, but I don't think anything the Bush administration did comes even close to what we are experiencing, now.

(26,268 posts)Packed with lifetime appointment, trump* (or, actually more likely Stephen Miller) approved judges. I don't even want to think about what might still happen with the SCOTUS. It could easily be a generation, at the minimum, before the damage can be undone. And that's only possible if we don't have a repeat of 2000 and 2016's Electoral College disasters.
Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but the only alternative to a fair, majority rules election is really too frightening for me to think about.

(5,810 posts)I thought that after the 2016 election and all the information that came out following the election, then the Mueller investigation, that the people with the power in DC would have stepped up and done their job to rid us of this nightmare. All the craziness was like nothing Id ever witnessed but I kept thinking and saying to myself that Congress would soon put a stop to it. That is what kept me from losing it. That thought gave me comfort and allowed me to get some rest at night
Alas, I have been repeatedly let down. Every time I thought that THIS will be the time it ends, it has not happened. There was a kerfuffle and dust up for a few days and then ....poof...nothing. I dont know of a time when I have been more disappointed or let down by our so-called leaders. Not to say there has been no effort to bring Justice, but the democrats cant do it all alone. There has to be bipartisan effort. And the republicans are sitting on their hands or are actively assisting tRump.
So my faith in our government to make things right again, to see the checks and balances WORK for the people has diminished to a tiny flame with barely a flicker. More like a dull ember with barely a spark left to ignite anything. I never thought Id see the USA destroyed in my lifetime but that appears to be what is happening and there is nothing I can do but watch with dismay.

(10,011 posts)The Party leaders have long dreamed of preserving their power permanently by making it impossible for Democrats to be elected as a majority. Their efforts have been toward relegating Democrats to a permanent minority party through gerrymandering, extensive voter suppression, the war on drugs targeting minorities, constant fear mongering and stoking of hatred and anger, and conservative judges (including the Supreme Court). The House win in 2018 threw a spoke in the wheel, but Republicans in Congress are doing nothing to curb Trump because he is their ticket to reelection in 2020. If Trump goes down, at least some of them will go down with him.
We need to continue throwing spokes in their wheels. One thing Ill do is donate as much as I can to the Democrat who runs against John Cornyn and help register new voters in Texas. Defeating Cornym would give us another Senate seat, and we need every seat we can win. And, of course, Ill vote for any Democrat who wins the nomination.

This a-hole is affecting us all, and draining our energy with his constant shock & awe campaigns.
We need to be strong to continue the fight, and sometimes a hiatus helps to recharge the batteries.

(3,473 posts)Trump and co. will certainly use all kinds of dirty tricks and we shouldn't ignore that he has zero respect for the law. I think the midterms were an indication that more people are waking up to what Trump really is. We have to fight and GOTV like never before for 2020. There is still hope. Don't give up. Turn that fear, anxiety, depression, whatever negative thoughts into anger and do everything you can to help the party win as many seats as possible.
