General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'm reading Michelle Obama's book.
I'm about 300 pages in, but can only read small sections at a time. Being reminded of the class we traded in for the worst trash ever makes it hard to get through. Reading about how well we treat our presidents and their families and how much the Obamas appreciated it, only to have the current squatters shit all over everything, depresses me.
So I read a few pages, get a little nostalgic for what we had, and then have to put it down. I miss the Obamas SO MUCH. I miss having a real president, a smart president, a compassionate president ... all the things Barack Obama was and is. And I miss having a classy FLOTUS and well-mannered kids and joy in our White House. This book is a huge reminder of how far we have fallen.
That being said, it is a fascinating book. I'm thinking that if we ever get a real president again and honor is restored to the office, I may be able to read it again and enjoy it a bit more.
Anyone else respond to it like this?

(27,995 posts)I listened to it on Audible last fall. Michelle's warm, reassuring voice was a pleasure to listen to. The book is uplifting. This was my favorite book of 2018!

(14,643 posts)I haven't bought Hillary's book. I'm afraid it would be WAY too upsetting.

(12,597 posts)I was shocked at how depressed it made me to just think about it.
I miss the Obamas too. Hope you get through the book, because it does paint such a nice picture of Michelle growing up and her family.

(14,643 posts)Maybe one day ...
The part about Michelle growing up wasn't bad. But once the political stuff started, it got harder to read. I will likely finish it this week, as long as I can get myself to keep picking it up and reading a little at a time.

(30,745 posts)It helped.
Also, she mentions a book, a very slim book, that she read after the election was taken from her: The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer.

(16,786 posts)In 2008 when she came to Rochester on behalf of Barack. My husband and I volunteered for that event and sat by her podium. She embraced me after I complimented her on her DNC speech evoking her Father and his principles. I said it reminded me of my late Father as well. She relates to people in a way warm remarkable for a First Lady.
The current one is distant and resembles an Ice Queen.

You're right about the Ice Queen. That entire family is soulless.

(32,645 posts)I thoroughly enjoyed her book. I couldn't put it down! Michelle Obama is a down-to-earth, intelligent and likable person. She tells many great stories and shares her observations on growing up in Chicago, meeting and falling in love with Barack, their life in politics, living in the White House, and how it affected her kids and her other family members.
I've recommended her book to several people I know.

(15,122 posts)I devoured Michelle's book. I usually detest memoires, but she was so genuine. I am astounded that we went from a beautiful and brilliant first family to sleazy and cruel.

(14,643 posts)The two families could not possibly be different. Honestly, I think we could have survived another Bush better than this dumpster fire.

(8,287 posts)and hers is amazing. I started it but I'm not to the part about him running for President yet. I am to the point where he is considering a Senate run.
I love that the book is so easy to read. I can relate to the pages as I grew up about 90 miles from her in the midwest. She's the real deal and I am really enjoying the book. I hope to have it finished by the end of the month.
It doesn't make me sad though. I have enjoyed every bit of it.
What makes me sad is watching the news and the current shit show that is in the WH. IQ45 makes me sad. Angry. Disgusted. Frustrated. Feeling hopeless. Furious and any other adjectives I could type to describe that racist creep.

(14,643 posts)And I really was looking forward to this one. I just read Trevor Noah's "Born a Crime" and thoroughly enjoyed it. There are parts that made me literally laugh out loud in bed and wake my husband. (Maybe not the best bedtime book for that reason.)
The parts of Michelle's book you've read so far are interesting and, for me, didn't trigger stuff. The more it got into the politics, election, moving in, etc., the more upsetting it got for me, exactly for the reasons you stated in your last paragraph. The Obamas exude class. The contrast is so enormous and soul-suckingly sad. I'm not sure they've invented an adjective that sufficiently describes IQ45's depravity.

(5,376 posts)How blessed were we as a nation to have such a kind, decent, intelligent, compassionate, strong, lovely woman as our FLOTUS. I shall be forever grateful for the 8 years the Obamas were in the White House, and the amazing lives they have lived. I understand your sadness, but so pleased you have enjoyed her story.
Cheers.

(16,927 posts)trying to read THE AUDACITY OF HOPE by Barack Obama!
I got so depressed with the contrast of what we had and what we have now that I put the book away and will finish it when IQ45 is gone!

(6,819 posts)right up there with Hillary in the intelligent First Lady department. She picked her causes carefully and knew the Obamas were always under scrutiny.
Great read. If we can hang on til the Dumpster criminal cabal is in jail, we can once again bring dignity to the country. Her book is proof that folks like the Obamas are out there. It will give you hope.

(32,005 posts)Im just blown away with her honesty and compassion. And her brains and class. And the loving relationship she has with Barack. I miss them so much. I see the ugly, hateful, blobs squatting in the WH now and I want to vomit. We have fallen so far.

(1,336 posts)Absolutely fascinating and beautifully written. I'm at the part where Barack has decided to run for state senator. And not being terribly familiar with Chicago politics, I've been quite interested in learning about the bond between municipal politicians and their constituents and how important creating that bond is. Every time Michele mentions "community organizer", I'm reminded of Snowflake Snookie (aka Palin) snorting and denigrating this very critical work in the body politic.
