The primary function of a grand jury is to consider testimony and other evidence in order
to determine whether or not there is "probable cause" to indict someone for a crime. It does not simply investigate for the sake of investigation. Grand juries have a purpose; ordinarily, to answer the question "Should John Doe be charged with the crime of ____________?" BUT,------------
The grand jury impaneled by the Special Counsel was unique. Everyone at the DOJ and all the Special Counsel's team knew from the outset that DOJ policy prohibited the indictment of Donald Trump, whose conduct, together with those acting on his behalf, was the focus of the investigation. So, what, if anything, was the purpose of THIS grand jury?
In virtually all prior similar situations within our lifetimes, it is my understanding that the testimony and exhibits generated by the grand juries were made available to Congress so that it could determine whether or not the evidence provided a basis for impeachment. There is no precedent for an AG "shortcutting" the procedure and withholding the evidence from Congress.
If the Trump Whitehouse and its puppet AG are correct in their pronouncement that Congress is not entitled to the entire Mueller Report, including the grand jury testimony it could petition the Court to release, then they are telling us that the 22 month investigation by the Special Counsel---insofar as it concerned Donald Trump---was totally pointless. Trump can't be indicted, so the evidence against him just gets flushed.
If this is true, so much for "No man is above the law" and "We are a nation of laws". And, this rot, this smirking disregard of laws and standards of conduct that have guided us for several generations, will metastasize and corrupt all aspects of our society.
Buckle up.
