Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, though, Trump sought to pin the blame on his predecessor for the uproar.
Obama separated the children, just so you understand. President Obama separated the children, Trump said. The cages that were shown, very inappropriate, they were built by President Obama and the Obama administration not by Trump.
The press knows it, you know it, we all know it, he said. Im the one that stopped it.

(11,738 posts)They are still a minority of the actual people who consume media. His lies need to be continuously challenged. President Obama's administration did put children in facilities and sometimes in temporary centers. HOWEVER, there was an explicit policy to treat families coming across the border together as a unit and keep them together. The asshole Trump is that one who changed the policy and started treating all people coming across as criminals and causing the separation.
He knows it and all rational people know it. Well perhaps he doesn't know it then, because he is not rational in the least.

(81,515 posts)Trump lies yet again about Obama and separating families at the border

President Trump repeated a short time ago a falsehood hes pushed several times before, that President Obama had a policy of separating migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border and that Trump had ended the practice.
To put it into fast-food context, thats a quadruple whopper, with extra cheese.
During the Obama administration, family separations were rare and predicated upon two conditions: whether border officials felt the parents or guardians posed a threat to the children, or whether the adults, under U.S. immigration law, had to be detained based on prior criminal convictions.
Standard procedure, both in the civil immigration context and in the domestic criminal justice context, is to not incarcerate children with adults (yes, there are exceptions).

(15,805 posts)Trump doesn't want to take any responsibility for his disastrous decisions, so he won't take any blame for creating the policy of family separations because of the terrible political optics. First tried to blame Democrats:

Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there parents once they cross the Border into the U.S. Catch and Release, Lottery and Chain must also go with it and we MUST continue building the WALL! DEMOCRATS ARE PROTECTING MS-13 THUGS.
Now Trump's lying and trying to blame his appalling policy on Obama when he was the one who ordered Attorney General Jeff Sessions to enforce his "zero tolerance" policy at the Southern border in April 2018. Even before it became the official policy of the Trump administration, a "trial run" began in 2017 that resulted in children being separated from their parents who were taken into custody for criminal prosecution.
"The Obama administration did not do that, no. We did not separate children from their parents," former Obama domestic policy adviser Cecilia Muñoz told NPR in May 2018. "This is a new decision, a policy decision put in place by the attorney general," which Muñoz said "puts us in league with the most brutal regimes in the world's history."
