Was to put a check on this outlaw administration.
I think we are playing way too nice still.
Where is the urgency?

(7,142 posts)It get sick of hearing that impeachment will rile up Trump's base, well so be it, they will vote for him without impeachment.
Impeachment will rile up the Democratic base. Let's do it, 2020 is too far away.

(6,007 posts)Another interesting point I heard today was that by starting impeachment hearings they would be required to have the full Mueller report as part of discovery.

(1,977 posts)Honestly how will that be accomplished? We already have mechanisms in place to get the full report to people in congress... And they are not complying. So how will impeachment change that?

Then we go to court, then we debate it, then we debate high crimes, then we hand them a baseball bat so the reps can beat a dead horse, and a straw man, and throw up a few red herings, and then maybe we can all agree that maybe Trump did something, but we aren't sure and everyone just doesn't give a shit anymore.

(37,648 posts)I'm sure Congress knows what will be coming in the redacted version. I think they're ready for pushing that thru the court system.
They requested tax returns from the IRS.
Businesslike is a good way to go. Serious and they mean business. There are strong statements being made (Schiff's "But I don't" speech was one for the record, IMO)
I think they're doing great.

(15,121 posts)I think we should do this with purpose and a plan. This is what it looks like to me. They don't want anyone to say "but they didn't follow the letter of the law" - as if the Repugs ever do! Then when we get the report and get all of the information - and I believe that we will, we can pursue impeachment with all of our ammo. If we rush forward into the fray, then the other side gets to manage the narrative. We know they are good at that. I really like Nadler, Schiff, Waters and the way they are handling their hearings.

Barr is trying to bury it in a coffin in a glacial crevasse and then set it on fire! I find it difficult to believe that there is only one copy of this report.
But I do not believe that he will succeed. This is the fight for our democracy and our lives!

(6,916 posts)Why are you telling Dems to go easy? To wait?
leftieNanner
(15,121 posts)I can't answer for Honeycombe8, but I think we need to do this the right way and we are.
It has been an agonizing two plus years since The Orange One was "elected" and I want him gone yesterday. But I believe that we need to do this following the rule of law so that when all of this comes out - and it will - we will be able to bring a Republican or two along with us. If we can't convince some Senators that this is all real, then we will lose everything.

(6,916 posts)For one, Dems could change their stupid hearing format where guys like Mnuchin can run out the clock.
Allow unlimited time for questions. And get a real prosecutor to ask the questions. This disjointed limited time stuff is crap.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)They have to wait to get the redacted report before they sue for it or subpoena it (if they can do that). If they don't wait, the court would kick it out as premature, and the subpoena might be denied. They know that the redactions will be inappropriate, leaving much of the report and evidence redacted. They'll have to sue to get it unredacted. Check.
They have officially requested tax returns. Check. (A war has started on this, probably ending up in court.)
They are holding hearings of Barr and Mueller starting this week. Check.
What do you suggest they do? This is the way to get the report and tax returns. There is a legal step, each step of the way. Then it all ends up in court. But courts don't waste their time on matters where the statutory legal procedures haven't been followed first.
They know what they're doing, IMO.

(6,916 posts)Hold Barr in contempt if he refuses to answer whether he gave the report to the White House.
What Dems allowed to happen with Barr today is a disgrace.
They should eliminate the 5min question period make him answer.
They should require him to answer questions or refer for prosecution.
And they should be screaming COVERUP to the rooftops.
On the other hand, your approach does help Trump
and the Republicans run out the clock till 2020. So maybe I should rethink - maybe your approach is best?

(6,916 posts)If we want Dems to act we have to pressure them.
Tell them to act. Subpoenas. Subpoena enforcement. Criminal referrals for people who break the law. Like Barr.
Subpoenas to Devin Nunes to figure out who is funding his BS lawsuits.
Subpoenas to any woman who has an NDA with Trump to break the NDA.
DO SOMETHING Democrats! You have power. Use it!!!
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)What law did he break?
Subpoena what? Who?
Do you think there's a legal right for Congress to know who is funding Nunes' lawsuits for personal damages?
Why do we want more women to talk about Trump? You don't think that would confuse the important issues of tax evasion and possible money laundering, and maybe illegal receipts from Russia? Do you think Mueller has already interviewed women who had NDAs with Trump?
They are very busy. Did you watch the hearing today where Barr testified before Congress?
I guarantee you they have attorneys working, drafting litigation to get the Mueller report, if they don't get it beforehand. And/or maybe a draft of a subpoena. I'm sure they have lawyers working out a plan on what to do if the IRS defies their official request for Trump's tax returns. They have to be ready to go on these things, if necessary, in a short period of time.

It plays right into the narrative that this is a Witch Hunt instead of following procedure and rule of law. Moral superiority will not get us anywhere.

(37,648 posts)The law DOES provide certain avenues to get these things. We have to try those first.

Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Barr, an attorney, must have broken laws, since you say so. But surely you know which laws he broke. List them here:_____________ _____________________________________________________________.
I think the Committee members know a bit more than you about how to get what they're after. I wouldn't "misunderestimate" Maxine Waters.
Some of these things will end up in court. Courts require that you pursue the avenues open to you first, before bothering the courts. Because it's possible one of those avenues would have worked, but if not, it tells the Court where both parties stand.
Trying filing a personal injury lawsuit and explaining to the judge that no, you hadn't asked the defendant if he'd pay your for your damages. Judge turns to Defendant and says, "Will you?" Defendant says, "Yes. She never asked." Judge kicks you out of court, and your lawyer's reputation is sullied. You might even get a fine for wasting the court's time. And you had to spend thousands of dollars paying court costs and drafting petitions and responses and serving subpoenas to get to court.
Running off half cocked, yelling that you want the report, would accomplish nothing. Except make the Democrats look crazy and incompetent.
They know what they're doing.
sharedvalues
(6,916 posts)You're moving the goalposts.
We're talking about subpoenas and investigation. And then holding people like Barr TO the subpoenas. With real enforcement. Where if he refuses to answer, he can be held in contempt of congress. Which is a crime!
Not sure why this is so hard.

(37,648 posts)questions at the hearing today, a draft lawsuit and maybe subpoena regarding the Mueller report, plans on what to do if the IRS defies the official request for the tax returns, etc.
All the things Congress CAN do to get the report and these other things, must be done before filing suit, or a court might throw it out saying, "Go back and do the things that the law provides for you to get these things. If you can't, come back."

(11,949 posts)And Partisan voters got out and voted. But we always do. Vote, that is.
We won the house by winning district that will remain unsafe for us in 2020 buy getting people out to vote on healthcare. And other issues that affect Americans on a daily basis.
If we overplay our hand and are not seen as pushing for kitchen table issues that help Americans we risk losing those seats right back.
Trump is doubling down to try to get us to take our eye off the issues ball and focus on him. If we do, I fear the results. If we impeach with no conviction we may well give the White House back to him. And this Senate will never convict.
Yes, investigate. But most of the stories we need coming out are how we are trying to make Americans lives better. We make the election about trump we may well lose.

Who cares that Comey, Mueller, Sessions, etc, are all republicans & that the dems have basically been powerless for the first two years of this administration, the MSM will neglect to remind the clueless Americans about that.
