A Canadian family’s trip to Florida ended tragically after an 87-year-old man died of an apparent heart attack during the drive home.

Fernand Drapeau’s wife and 60-year-old son had decided to continue driving with his body back to Canada to avoid costly fees from the U.S. health care system, the Vancouver Sun reported.

Drapeau’s body was discovered in the backseat by agents along the U.S.-Canada border March 31 after being stopped and searched before driving into the country.

Authorities believe Drapeau had been dead for at least two days before he was discovered, CTV News reported.

Canadians run the risk of costly healthcare bills if they happen to need medical care while visiting the states if they're without travelers insurance.

Did he need medical help and they ignored his need so he dies and they continued to drive him home?

when she fell ill. These were not poor hungry people - they were both lawyers but she insisted on heading back to New York - she had excellent US coverage. She reached home and was dead in hours - of a heart attack. She was in her mid sixties.

there is likely a repatriation fee in order to have the body delivered back to the home country.
