One time I read a New York Times movie review and I found this sentence:

(5,179 posts)I spent a year teaching writing to college freshmen and every single one of them made that mistake. (Also "breath" instead of "breathe." This is the stuff spellcheck cannot fix. You need a human, dammit.

I tell them they have access to two spell checks: the one in the computer and the one in their head. If they are unsure of the spelling of a word, LOOK IT UP IN THE DICTIONARY!!!!
Lose/loose is discussed as well.
