or does anyone really believe he's so exhausted that he needs a nice long rest? or that he was working so hard his family missed him? or that there is some other entity in the world which needs his expertise and shining intellect more urgently than the DOE?

Once Perry found out what the Department of Energy actually does, he turned out to be one of Trump's better Cabinet secretaries...which is probably why Trump is forcing him out. He's not evil enough.
