American Airlines jet "nearly crashed" during takeoff at JFK last week

Last Updated Apr 17, 2019 1:57 PM EDT

A close call for American Airlines Flight 300 at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport now appears far worse than first reported. Sources tell CBS News the Airbus with 102 passengers and eight crew on board "nearly crashed" last week when the wing scraped the ground and hit a sign and light pole during takeoff.

"We were banking, uncontrolled bank 45 degrees to the left," a pilot could be heard saying on the air traffic control audio of the incident.

"Turbulence from another aircraft?"

"I don't think so. There's a good cross wind but we had an uncommanded roll to the left as we rotated," he responded.

One source briefed on the incident told CBS News: "That was as close as anybody would ever want to come to crashing." According to people familiar with the ongoing investigation, preliminary indicators are that there was a "loss of control" on takeoff, reports CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave.

...or a crosswind gust? Years ago, I worked for an FBO in Peoria (fueling) while training for my private ticket. One day, I was up on the ladder refueling a C-172 when a C-210 came in with a significant crosswind component. A gust hit it just before the main gear touched the ground, pushing it off the runway and into a parked Piper Aztec, shearing the C-210's nose gear off and the vertical stabilizer from the Aztec. It then hit the ground and careened down the ramp while its engine ran at full power (presumably a failed go around attempt by the pilot), the prop chopping the asphalt as it slid towards me, still on the ladder, mouth agape. It stopped well before it hit the C-172 I was fueling, but it was an event I could never forget...

received an large amount of overtime due to having to clean the poop off all the seats prior to relaunching the plane.

Wow, the highways are nutz, the airports are crazy, the trains don't want us, the buses suck. We're going to have to allow a much longer travel time for business pretty soon.
