Probably the most famous person I've ever had an indepth conversation with is Janet Reno.

I've shaken the hands of both Bill and Hillary and I briefly greeted Joe Biden once, but in terms of actually having several minutes to have a back and forth conversation with, Janet Reno tops them all.

I actually met her twice, and we discussed--among other things--the love of Florida's natural springs. (We both agreed that Ichetucknee was our favorite). Nothing deep, but it was a great honor just to have those few minutes to kibitz.

The thing about AG Reno was she was extremely, extremely honest and honorable (she and President Carter probably share the title of most honest people in Washington in the modern era) and knew exactly what her position demanded of her. She knew that although President Clinton appointed her, she was not his personal attorney and it was not her domain to step on an ongoing investigation, no matter how ridiculous it ended up becoming. (And it soon became one of the most ridiculous episodes American politics would ever see.)

I'm sure President Clinton would have loved it if his Attorney General stepped up to the podium and issued a personal defense of him. I'm also sure he never would have ordered it and would never have expected her to do such a thing. And I'm sure she never would have done such a thing.

And despite being dogged with asinine investigations of him for three-quarters of his presidency, President Clinton never personally blamed AG Reno for the situation he faced. And when she passed away in 2016 (one day before this country went to shit, to be precise), President Clinton was there to eulogize her at her funeral with the highest of praise.

That's respect for a job well done, and what an Attorney General should be.

We sorely miss Janet Reno today.
