NM-SEN: Toulouse Oliver prepares Senate campaign

SANTA FE — Democrat Maggie Toulouse Oliver filed paperwork Friday declaring herself a candidate for the U.S. Senate — setting up a showdown in the Democratic primary with U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján, who is also seeking the seat.

Toulouse Oliver, New Mexico’s secretary of state and a former Bernalillo County clerk, filed a statement of candidacy on Friday with the Federal Election Commission, one of the steps necessary to run for the Senate seat that will be vacated next year by the retirement of Democrat Tom Udall.

Toulouse Oliver’s campaign adviser, Heather Brewer, suggested a formal announcement will come soon.

“People can definitely expect news from her next week,” Brewer said.

Her entrance into the race would set up a contest with Luján for the Democratic nomination in the June 2020 primary.
