For years, President Donald Trump has insisted its impossible to find Americans to fill seasonal jobs at his hotels, resorts, and wineries, leaving him no choice but to hire foreign guest workers instead. You cant get help, he has said.
But government records obtained by BuzzFeed News reveal for the first time that at least 58 US workers applied for the temporary jobs as cooks, servers, and housekeepers at Mar-a-Lago and other Trump resorts from early 2014 through mid-2018.
Only one of them appears to have been hired.
Businesses owned by or bearing the name Trump have sought to hire more than 600 employees through the guest worker program since he launched his presidential campaign in June 2015.
A yearlong investigation by BuzzFeed News found that in many industries with seasonal staffing needs, employers prefer to hire foreign guest workers because they are seen as more compliant less likely to quit for another job or to complain about low pay, physically demanding tasks, or difficult schedules. Unlike Americans who commute to their jobs and may have families and other demands on their time, guest workers are often housed on the job site and are therefore able to work longer hours.

(7,398 posts)that claimed they had hundreds of qualified workers available, but the Mar-A-Lago people preferred to use foreign workers. If I remember correctly that employment agency was in Palm Beach county.

In my state the employer gets a tax break*, only has to pay minimum wage and then all the rest above. They will also work two jobs, especially in an isolated work environment this makes it harder for the residents who are already there and capable of working. Then some of the employers... you wouldn't choose to even apply to work for them. And then there is the "two job" guest workers, especially those from the eastern Europe and Russia area. Knowing they won't get fired, will often do little actual work as the regular employees, knowing the tasks must be done, have to pick up the slack and work harder at their two jobs... if they can find two. Then there is the issue of OT... you either have a boss who keeps you at 38hurs/wk so you don't get benefits or they make you work every waking hour and still won't pay OT. That's the economy in this part of tourism world.
*The tax break does have a rule involving OT and guest/regular workers.

(1,178 posts)the talk of closing the borders and keeping illegals out of here is just that: talk. Trump's biggest donors depend on the cheap labor, that's why they're not serious on doing anything about it. It just allows them to tell the voting base what they want to hear.
