Schumer says McConnell has turned Senate into a 'legislative graveyard'

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) blasted Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday, arguing that the Kentucky Republican has turned the upper chamber into a "legislative graveyard."

"Leader McConnell ought to allow debate and amendments immediately — which Democrats would welcome — on commonsense, House-passed bills on democracy reform, combating the gun violence epidemic, health care, and so much more," Schumer said in a statement.

He added that "the Senate must once again become a legislative body that helps the American people, not a graveyard.”

Schumer's statement came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) knocked McConnell in a "Dear Colleague" letter sent to Democrats on Friday, when she urged him to take up House-passed legislation, including a wide-ranging ethics and election reform bill, gun background check legislation and the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization.

Yes but he's gotten rich in the process so McConnell feels that should count for something.

2. Schumer should have a DAILY press conference dedicated to announcing the following:

"This is Day #3,451 that Mitch McConnell, alone, has OBSTRUCTED the business of the Senate by refusing to bring any of these good bills passed by the House to the floor. When will your blockade end, Mr. McConnell??"

on edit: he should end his DAILY announcement with the question: "Why are you holding the American government hostage?"

on 2nd edit: Every US Senator should hold a press conference like this, DAILY.

Bill Maher always goes off on this subject and I have agreed with him...take the gloves off NOW! I am sick and tired of the "we take the high road" nonsense. I posted a question about this over a year ago and at the time half of the responses were "let's not sink to their level". I think I will make another poll regarding this issue tonight on DU.

6. Yes he should. The Dems don't get in front of the cameras enough with bills being killed.

McConnell clearly enjoys this and sadly, has been very successful. Garland, judge appointments, nuclear option (Harry Reid may wish he didn't go there). Mitch has already donned the title "Grim Reaper" as he intends to kick it up a notch in the next session. Dems need to punch back hard. They somehow seem incapable. It's pure power and Moscow Mitch is driving the bus for the moment. Why the Dems are not putting out the recipients of contributions from Russia, funneled through NRA or otherwise, is beyond me. Hopefully the referred Mueller cases will contain tangible corruption that identifies some of it, but Barr could squash the release or any follow-up prosecution under DOJ.

That's what the Senate was before LBJ took the helm as majority leader. Read Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Master of the Senate". It's all his fault.

McConnell murders perfectly healthy, worthwhile legislation so that Congress "can't get anything done because the Ds have too many hearings."

Mitch McConnell is the gravedigger of democracy.

As long as he's getting what he wants, he's going to keep going. If Trump's voted out, he'll continue to obstruct as he did with Obama. He rushed dozens and dozens of judge nominations through when he knew he could get his friends from the Federalist Society on the bench, and withheld nominations for years under Obama until there was a shortage and a crisis. This is all in addition to his blatant theft of Merrick Garland's seat on the SCOTUS.

He's super rich, insanely powerful, completely out of touch with any constituency that doesn't include other extremely wealthy and powerful people like himself. He will actively harm the poor, women, POC, LGBTQ+, and immigrants, because none of those people even exist in any meaningful way for him. They're (we're) an abstraction. He will suppress votes, gerrymander, lie, cheat, block Senate votes, obstruct, whatever he thinks he needs to do to give his party the tiniest edge. Not even because he believes in the party, but because it will keep him in power.

Comrade McConnell is probably the most dangerous person to our American Democracy today.
