(530 posts)If we're to believe those who want to lead this nation that all life is sacred but want to tell women what choices they have, what choice are they giving women who are pregnant in war zones when dropping bombs on them and killing both the mother and fetus ?
Seems like they're passing judgment that the child will be an enemy of the U.S ?
And yes, when it comes to starving children, if there's no profit in it, there's no need for a debate or remedy in some leaders minds.

(582 posts)I'm not specifically liberal, I've just been pigeoned holed into being one. I am fighting for what American was or should have been. I did many relief flights to Africa to feed people. Yet now Republicans preach, keep the money at home while at the same time attack relief efforts at home. They talk a mean game about pro-life, but refuse to give money to PP, whose Federal money is spent on well baby and well mommy as well as Stds, and not one cent of Fed money on abortion. (Put my money where my mouth is, several decades of CFC and such like donations went specifically there). I'm not specifically liberal, but the scapegoating of illegals as the source of all troubles, and being prepared to change American law so that a latino has to prove citizenship or being assumed guilty, is not American. I'm not specifically a liberal, but when Republicans place industry above government (like fascists), fail to fund or allow appointments to posts in regulatory agencies, like the Labor Board or the Consumer Credit Protection Agency, when tort reform specifically limits the liability of businesses, and restricts the rights of the injured parties, how can one not avoid the label liberal? When the Tea Party purges Republican senior officials for reasons of ideological purity, a kinder, gentler version of the "Night of the Long Knives." how can one remain Conservative? Anti liberalism, a mythic past, traditional values, militarism, and above all hatred of gays, latinos, women on BC,all strike me that the Tea Party has taken the Republican party to fascism. I'm a liberal because I am a real conservative, I believe in America, not Corporate America.

(1,942 posts)This post makes it clear. Those who think that abortion should be outlawed are not pro-life, they are ANTI-CHOICE.
But the Republicans have been very good at twisting the English language.
Think about it:
You have "pro-life" on one side and on the other "pro-abortion". These are now commonly used in the media on all sides.
It is a horrible twist of the reality, designed to make the pro-life people seem like much better people than those who "like" abortion. This is of course what is suggested by these terms, not the reality.
No one "likes" abortion. Abortion is a very traumatic event for any woman...
Only two terms should be used in this case:
PRO-CHOICE, and ANTI-CHOICE.
Changing the discourse can skew reality and twist the minds.
Let's spread the word and push the media to use the correct terms. It might help put things in their proper place.

(19,379 posts)I don't believe the GOP movers and shakers really care about the unborn either. It's merely a wedge issue that they've latched on to because it panders to their religous right base.

(7,640 posts)The people who own the GOP probably look down their noses at the people that take "social issues" seriously. Those issues are just tools they use to buy votes cheap and promote politicians who will fatten their bottom line.

(8 posts)I was just thinking about this "pro-life" misnomer today while watching Marco Rubio on television drone on seemingly endlessly. What struck me is what a farce that label is on the face of it--and it's still being used by the self-righteous anti-abortion crowd to this day. It's nothing but a sanctimonious attempt at hiding behind religious dogma and dodging the actual position. Just keep it honest and say what your actual position is on the issue--anti-abortion or anti-choice. I'd respect the use of the term more perhaps if such people were also pro-social security, pro-universal health care, anti-war, anti-capital punishment, anti-poverty, etc.
