Six days after Houston City Council approved 220 firefighter layoffs, Fire Chief Sam Peña followed through telling the department's newest hires in an emailed letter, "I am sorry to have to notify you that your position is being eliminated..."
Peña explained the layoffs, telling firefighters, "The City of Houston has experienced a sizeable budget shortfall due to the implementation of Prop B."
The letter says the layoffs are not a reflection of their individual work and informed them of upcoming informational sessions on unemployment resources.

Prop B was on the November ballot to give pay parity for firefighters with their police counterparts. Because it passed, the department faced a major budget shortfall and they're laying off the 200+ to give the remaining 3700 firefighters their raises.

(32,091 posts)When I got laid off, my former employer dropped the list at 6 PM on a Friday. They told the local newspaper before they told us. That's how most of the people on the list found out about it--by reading the headlines in the Saturday issue of the local fish wrap.

Very bad optics indeed.
